A 31-year-old Indian expatriate died, reportedly after being stabbed by an Asian man in a labour camp in Al Sailiya on the outskirts of Doha a little after midnight on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Shameer, who hailed from the southern state of Kerala and had been based here for five years.

Shameer was allegedly stabbed by a Nepalese worker in the presence of his brother.

The duo had been to the camp to enquire about a friend staying there after they heard that he had a brawl with a group of workers.

Shameer was stabbed with a sharp instrument as his brother Saleem watched in horror, people close to them told The Peninsula yesterday.

He was rushed to the emergency unit of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) but succumbed to injuries on the way. The alleged attacker and some others from the camp are reported to have been arrested by police.

Contacted, Capital Police asked this newspaper to speak with Industrial Area Police, who refused to comment, saying they were not authorised to interact with the media. The Indian embassy said it hadn’t been informed of the tragic incident. “We will find out details in the morning (today),” an official said late last evening.

The body of the deceased has been kept at HMC mortuary and is to be flown home for the last rites.

Shameer hailed from Omassery in Kozhikode district. He had been working as a heavy vehicle driver with a private company, staying in Al Murra, with his brother.

Shameer was married, with a girl child. The tragic incident happened as he was preparing to visit his family back home next week. “His last visit to Kerala was about nine months ago. He had built a new home in his native town and was looking forward to occupying it during his next visit,” said a source.
