(CNN)For the first time in the history of the Women’s World Cup, the final will not be played in the capital city of the host country.
Next month, Lyon’s Parc Olympique Lyonnais will be the home of the semifinals and the final of the French edition of the anticipated tournament because in France’s third largest city, the women’s game has found itself its own capital.
At the heart of the city’s story is Olympique Lyonnais’ women’s team. Thirteen league titles, six-time Champions League winners, the first team, male or female, to win four successive Champions League titles — no other football team can currently compare.
