A former white police officer, Jason Van Dyke, has been sentenced to six years and nine months in prison, along with two-year probation, for the 2014 murder of black teenager Laquan McDonald in Chicago.

The case had sparked mass protests against the police brutality. Police dashcam video showed how Van Dyke shot McDonald 16 times.

Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reports from Chicago.
