Braving freezing cold and rain, thousands of people gathered at New York’s Times Square to ring in the New Year.

In a gesture highlighting the importance of journalism and press freedom, the organisers invited journalists for the traditional lowering of the crystal ball.

Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from New York.
