World AIDS awareness day march in Cape Town

In the last year, more than one million people in Cape Town tested positive for HIV.

Although the number of women with HIV declined by 26 percent, the UN says that young women between the ages of 15 and 24 account for two-thirds of new infections. Women are three times as likely to be infected due to both physiological and social factors.

South Africa has embarked on several initiatives to curb the spread of HIV, including plans for self-screening and distributing a treatment called PREP to communities at high risk of infection that should reduce the chance of HIV-negative people of contracting the disease.

Al Jazeera’s Fahmida Miller reports from Cape Town.
