A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday, September 29, triggering a tsunami and leaving nearly 400 people dead. Hundreds were also injured, and the death toll was expected to rise.
Electricity and communications have been cut off, making it difficult to assess the damage in the city of Palu and nearby fishing community of Donggala, a spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster management agency says.
