Afghanistan: Deadly suicide attack on Kabul sports club

A bomber blew himself up inside a sports club in Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least four people and wounding 18, the latest attack in the Afghan city.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which interior ministry spokesman Najib Danish said happened in a heavily Shia neighbourhood of Afghanistan‘s capital. A second explosion was reported minutes later at the site.

Tolo News reported the suicide attack took place in Kabul’s Qala-e-Nazer area.

Police spokesman Hashmat Stanikzai confirmed the first explosion and said the wounded were “being evacuated” from the club.

“Based on initial information [the blast] was caused by a suicide bomber,” Stanikzai said.

Social media users who purportedly witnessed the attack said the bomber killed the guards at the club before blowing himself up inside.

He “detonated inside where a large number of athletes had gathered. There are a lot of dead and wounded”, Mohammad Hanif said on Facebook.

In mid-August, at least 34 people were killed in a suicide attack in front of an education centre in the Shia neighbourhood of Dasht-e-Barchi west of Kabul.

The armed group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, known as ISIS) claimed responsibility for that bombing.
