Russia will create new military bases in the western portion of the country, in what Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu described as \u201cadequate countermeasures\u201d to Finland and Sweden\u2019s bid to join NATO.<\/p>\n

In a speech on Friday, Shoigu said the bid<\/a> by the two Nordic countries was among several military threats that have increased in recent years along Russia\u2019s northwestern border.<\/p>\n

Those threats also included the United States stepping up strategic bomber flights, sending warships to the Baltic Sea and intensifying training exercises in the region with its NATO partners, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTension continues to grow in the zone of responsibility of the Western Military District. We are taking adequate countermeasures,\u201d Shoigu said, as Moscow\u2019s forces continue their invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n
