{"id":48294,"date":"2022-05-11T10:23:46","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T10:23:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=48294"},"modified":"2022-05-11T10:23:46","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T10:23:46","slug":"shireen-abu-akleh-a-trailblazer-who-gave-voice-to-palestinians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=48294","title":{"rendered":"Shireen Abu Akleh: A trailblazer who gave voice to Palestinians"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Shireen Abu Akleh, the Palestinian Al Jazeera journalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/5\/11\/veteran-al-jazeera-journalist-killed-by-israeli-forces-live-news\">killed by Israeli forces<\/a> on Wednesday, was a veteran television correspondent who became a household name across the Arab world for her bold coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Jerusalem and a citizen of the United States, Abu Akleh, 51, is survived by her brother, Tony Abu Akleh.<\/p>\n<p>Friends and colleagues described Abu Akleh as a brave and kind reporter with an \u201cinfectious laugh\u201d who gave voice to the struggles of Palestinians over a career spanning nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur loss is so huge,\u201d said Nida Ibrahim, an Al Jazeera correspondent and colleague of Abu Akleh\u2019s in the occupied West Bank. \u201cShe was kind, dedicated and devoted. She knew the story through and through and she understood the nuances. She brought a wealth of information to her reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking through tears, Ibrahim described Abu Akleh as a \u201cunique\u201d human being who was \u201cvery well known, but modest\u201d and committed to personal excellence.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/5\/11\/shireen-abu-akleh-israeli-forces-kill-al-jazeera-journalist\">her death<\/a>, Abu Akleh had been learning Hebrew in order to understand Israeli media narratives better, and had just finished a diploma in digital media, Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s not only someone who was a veteran, who\u2019s been here covering the story for years, but also someone who was eager to keep learning and keep reporting using new means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Born in Jerusalem in 1971, Abu Akleh, who was a Christian, initially studied architecture before switching to journalism at Yarmouk University in Jordan. After graduating, she returned to Palestine and worked for several media outlets, including Voice of Palestine Radio and the Amman Satellite Channel. She joined Al Jazeera Media Network a year after it was launched in 1996, as one of the Qatar-based Arabic-language network\u2019s first field correspondents and gained fame for her coverage of the second Palestinian Intifada in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI chose journalism to be close to the people,\u201d Abu Akleh said in one video. \u201cIt might not be easy to change the reality, but at least I could bring their voice to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote data-dnt=\"true\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cI chose journalism to be close to people. She also covered regional news, including the war in Lebanon in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShireen was a trailblazer, an inspiration for us all,\u201d said Dalia Hatuqa, an Al Jazeera journalist who is a close friend of Abu Akleh, \u201cHer presence became synonymous with Al Jazeera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the height of the second Intifada, Hatuqa recalled Israeli soldiers going around the Palestine city of Ramallah and \u201cmimicking her, shouting from a bullhorn her famous closing lines: Shireen Abu Akleh, Al Jazeera, Ramallah\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hatuqa said to her friends that Abu Akleh was far more than the face of Al Jazeera in Palestine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had an infectious laugh. She loved to travel, see the world, shop, party,\u201d Hatuqa said. \u201cShe lost her mother and father when she was younger and saw so much cruelty in the world, especially in Palestine, but that never stopped her from appreciating and enjoying life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cHer voice was so beautiful, even when she was telling heart-breaking stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abu Akleh was on assignment in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/4\/30\/jenin-why-the-palestinian-city-became-a-symbol-of-the-resistance\">city of Jenin<\/a> in the occupied West Bank, covering Israeli raids on a refugee camp, when she was killed. She was shot in the head while wearing a blue flak jacket clearly marked with the word \u2018PRESS\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Al Jazeera Media Network called Abu Akleh\u2019s killing a \u201cblatant murder\u201d and a \u201cheinous crime\u201d. The network accused Israeli forces of targeting the veteran journalist with live fire and assassinating her in \u201ccold blood\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Israeli army denied targeting journalists and has offered a joint investigation into Abu Akleh\u2019s death amid a growing outcry.<\/p>\n<p>Tamer Al-Meshal, who was working with Abu Akleh at the time of her killing, called her a \u201cmodel\u201d for both Palestinian and Arab journalists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTill the very last second, she was professional and persevering in her work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last message Shireen Abu Akleh sent to Al Jazeera was via email at 6:13am in which she wrote: \u2018Occupation forces storm Jenin and besiege a house in the Jabriyat neighborhood.
