{"id":47355,"date":"2022-01-09T15:24:18","date_gmt":"2022-01-09T15:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=47355"},"modified":"2022-01-09T15:24:18","modified_gmt":"2022-01-09T15:24:18","slug":"sudan-security-forces-fire-tear-gas-at-khartoum-protesters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=47355","title":{"rendered":"Sudan security forces fire tear gas at Khartoum protesters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead css-1wt8oh6\"><em>A leading Sudanese protest group has rejected a UN initiative to hold talks with the military.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"117.01857499307\">\n<p>Security forces have fired tear gas as thousands rallied in Sudan\u2019s capital Khartoum and a neighbouring city, keeping up the pressure on the military following a coup 11 weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>The coup, led by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on October 25, derailed a power-sharing transition between the military and civilians that had been painstakingly established in the wake of the overthrow of longtime ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Security forces fired tear gas as pro-democracy protesters headed towards the presidential palace on Sunday, amid roadblocks seeking to prevent people converging there and at army headquarters \u2013 the epicentre of mass demonstrations that forced al-Bashir out.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters also rallied in Omdurman, Khartoum\u2019s twin city, as well as northern Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Mohamed Vall, reporting from Omdurman, said crowds have started to gather despite a heavy security presence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTear gas has been used against thousands of protesters in central Khartoum. They were marching towards the presidential palace. They tried to reach the palace but couldn\u2019t, as usual. They were pushed back security forces,\u201d Vall said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Omdurman, the crowd is picking up. They are behind schedule. They usually start early. They, too, are trying to march towards central Khartoum. To get there they will have to cross bridges which are closed and manned by security forces. Security forces are waiting for them in big numbers,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The protests since the coup \u2013 one of several power grabs in Sudan\u2019s post-independence history \u2013 has been met with a crackdown that has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/1\/6\/sudan-security-forces-fire-tear-gas-at-demonstrators-in-khartoum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed<\/a> at least 60 people, according to medics.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have repeatedly denied using live ammunition in confronting protesters and insist dozens of security personnel have been wounded during demonstrations that have often \u201cdeviated from peacefulness\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"770\" height=\"434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q6T9MKZ8jRE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Medics in white coats were seen joining Sunday\u2019s rallies to protest against the security forces\u2019 storming of hospitals and medical facilities during previous demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>The Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors, affiliated with the protest movement, said on Saturday that medics will deliver a memorandum to United Nations officials listing and complaining about \u201cassaults\u201d against such facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Sudan\u2019s civilian Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/1\/2\/sudan-pm-abdalla-hamdok-resigns-after-deadly-protest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resigned<\/a> saying the country was at a \u201cdangerous crossroads threatening its very survival\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He had taken up his position back only on November 21, having originally been deposed along with his government in the October coup.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, the UN said it would <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/1\/8\/un-to-hold-sudan-talks-to-end-crisis-after-coup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facilitate talks<\/a> between key Sudanese stakeholders in a bid to resolve the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>But the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), the civilian alliance which spearheaded the protests against al-Bashir and became integral to the transition government, said it had not received \u201cany details\u201d about the UN initiative.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the Sudanese Professionals Association \u2013 similarly instrumental in the anti-al-Bashir protests \u2013 said it completely \u201crejected\u201d the UN-facilitated talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way to resolve the Sudanese crisis begins with the complete overthrow of the putschist military council and the handover of its members to face justice over the killings committed against the defenceless [and] peaceful Sudanese people,\u201d the SPA said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Burhan has insisted that the October military takeover \u201cwas not a coup\u201d but only meant to \u201crectify the course of the Sudanese transition\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council is to meet on Wednesday to discuss the latest developments in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"770\" height=\"434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yd1paYxA3FE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A leading Sudanese protest group has rejected a UN initiative to hold talks with the military.Security forces have fired tear gas as thousands rallied in Sudan\u2019s capital Khartoum and a neighbouring city, keeping up the pressure on the military following a coup 11 weeks ago.
