nations pledge fund to prevent Afghanistan economic collapse"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"123.20642824808\">\n<p>The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has pledged to set up a humanitarian trust fund for Afghanistan as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2021\/12\/17\/afghanistans-tumbling-currency-adds-to-severe-economic-woes\">millions face hunger and poverty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The crisis is causing alarm with billions of dollars in aid and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/11\/29\/holdaresanctions-to-blame-for-afghanistans-humanitarian-crisis\">assets frozen<\/a> by the international community after the Taliban takeover of the country in August this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnless action is taken immediately, Afghanistan is heading for chaos,\u201d Prime Minister Imran Khan, of Pakistan \u2013 which is holding the summit, told a meeting of foreign ministers from the OIC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny government when it can\u2019t pay its salaries for its public servants, hospitals, doctors, nurses, any government is going to collapse but chaos suits no one, it certainly does not suit the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.2163009404389\">\n<p href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Afghanistan?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Afghanistan<\/a> including in partnership with other international actors. <a Islamic Development Bank would lead the effort to free up assistance by the first quarter of 2022.<\/p>\n<p>It also urged Afghanistan\u2019s rulers to abide by \u201cobligations under international human rights covenants, especially with regards to the rights of women, children, youth, elderly and people with special needs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The OIC meeting did not give the new Taliban government any formal international recognition and Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi was excluded from the official photograph taken during the event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1597049\" officially recognised\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current Afghanistan government is cooperating with every foreign organisation,\u201d he told reporters, adding that sanctions \u201cmust be removed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech to delegates, he said the US freezing of assets \u201cis a clear violation of the human rights of Afghans, and can be interpreted as enmity with an entire nation\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Economy in \u2018free fall\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>While some countries and organisations have begun delivering aid, a near-collapse of the country\u2019s banking system has complicated their work.<\/p>\n<p>United Nations\u2019 Undersecretary-General on Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths was also present at the OIC meeting and warned that <a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/afghanistan\/under-secretary-general-humanitarian-affairs-and-emergency-relief-coordinator-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afghanistan\u2019s economy<\/a> was \u201cnow in free fall\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t act decisively and with compassion, I fear this fall will pull the entire population with it,\u201d he said in his people are already facing hunger; health facilities are overflowing with malnourished children; some 70 percent of teachers are not getting paid and millions of children, Afghanistan\u2019s future are out of school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said unlocking financial and banking channels was essential \u201cbecause the economy can\u2019t function and people Islamabad [Farooq Naeem\/AFP]<\/figure>\n<p>Beyond immediate aid, Afghanistan needs help ensuring longer-term economic stability.<\/p>\n<p>Much will depend on whether Washington is willing to unfreeze billions of dollars in central bank reserves and lift sanctions that have caused many institutions and governments to shy away from direct dealings with the Taliban.<\/p>\n<p>Muttaqi reiterated the Taliban would not allow Afghanistan to be used as a base for attacks on other countries and he said no reprisals would be carried out against officials of the former government.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Taliban has faced heavy criticism for keeping women and girls out of employment and education and excluding broad sections of Afghan society from government.<\/p>\n<p>They have also been accused of
