{"id":47115,"date":"2021-12-07T06:22:39","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T06:22:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=47115"},"modified":"2021-12-07T06:22:39","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T06:22:39","slug":"body-of-sri-lankan-lynching-victim-arrives-from-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=47115","title":{"rendered":"Body of Sri Lankan lynching victim arrives from Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead css-1wt8oh6\">Sri Lankan officials receive charred body of factory manager lynched by a mob for alleged blasphemy last week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"74.408442669709\">\n<p>The charred body of a factory manager who was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/12\/6\/lynched-sri-lankan-manager-family-justice-pakistan-blasphemy\">lynched by a mob<\/a> in Pakistan for alleged blasphemy has been brought back to Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lankan national Priyantha Kumara was assaulted by a mob of hundreds of people before being dragged into the streets and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/12\/3\/sri-lankan-factory-manager-lynched-and-set-on-fire-in-pakistan\">set on fire<\/a> last Friday in Sialkot, Pakistan, where he helped run a sports equipment factory.<\/p>\n<p>Workers at the factory accused him of desecrating posters bearing the name of Islam\u2019s Prophet Muhammad.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Lankan government officials late on Monday received Kumara\u2019s remains in a wooden box decorated with flower garlands before preparations to hand over the coffin to his family for his last rites expected to be held on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Hours before the arrival of the remains, dozens of activist and religious groups gathered before Pakistan\u2019s mission in Sri Lanka\u2019s capital, Colombo, demanding justice for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPakistan will leave no stone unturned to apprehend those involved. They will be given very strong punishments,\u201d Pakistan\u2019s acting ambassador to Sri Lanka, Tanvir Ahmad, told Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian leaders who met him at the Pakistani mission.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad said Pakistan\u2019s Prime Minister Imran Khan had spoken with Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to reassure him that Pakistani authorities were investigating the lynching.<\/p>\n<p>Khan in a phone call with Rajapaksa said Pakistani police had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/12\/4\/dozens-arrested-in-pakistan-after-mob-kill-sri-lankan-manager\">arrested<\/a> more than 100 people in connection with the killing.<\/p>\n<p>In Pakistan, mere <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/9\/21\/explained-pakistans-emotive-blasphemy-laws\">allegations of blasphemy<\/a> can trigger mob attacks.
