{"id":46537,"date":"2021-10-08T04:22:58","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T04:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=46537"},"modified":"2021-10-08T04:22:58","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T04:22:58","slug":"us-submarine-hits-object-while-underwater-in-south-china-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=46537","title":{"rendered":"US submarine hits \u2018object\u2019 while underwater in South China Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead css-1wt8oh6\">Navy says some members of the nuclear-powered USS Connecticut\u2019s crew suffered minor injuries in collision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"89.699874947895\">\n<p>A US nuclear-powered submarine hit an \u201cobject\u201d while submerged in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region, injuring some of the crew, the United States Navy has said.<\/p>\n<p>None of the sailors on board the USS Connecticut suffered life-threatening injuries, the Navy said in a brief statement on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The incident took place on Saturday, it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe submarine remains in a safe and stable condition,\u201d the statement said. \u201cUSS Connecticut\u2019s nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement did not elaborate on what the vessel collided with, the location of the incident or the number of sailors who were injured.<\/p>\n<p>US officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Reuters news agency the incident took place in the South China Sea and that \u201cfewer than 15 people\u201d suffered minor injuries such as bruises and cuts. Two of the injuries were categorised as \u201cmoderate\u201d, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of the crew remains the Navy\u2019s top priority,\u201d the statement said, adding that the incident was under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The South China Sea is one world\u2019s most disputed and economically significant waterways. China claims almost the entire area under its controversial nine-dash line and has built artificial islands and set up military outposts in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam and the Philippines also claim parts of the sea, as does Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Malaysia <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/10\/5\/malaysia-summons-china-ambassador-over-south-china-sea-incursion\">summoned<\/a> the Chinese envoy after Chinese vessels entered Kuala Lumpur\u2019s territorial waters off the coast of Borneo.<\/p>\n<p>The US has been conducting what it calls \u201cfreedom of navigation\u201d operations in the South China Sea to assert navigational rights and freedoms in line with international law. Tensions in the area have only increased since 2016 when the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague rejected China\u2019s nine-dash line and ruled that Beijing had no historic title over the South China Sea after the Philippines\u2019s challenged Beijing\u2019s claims and actions over the disputed waterway.<\/p>\n<p>The US Navy said the submarine was now headed towards Guam.<\/p>\n<p>The USS Connecticut is a Seawolf-class fast-attack submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22) and has 140 crew, including 14 officers. The Navy says the Seawolf vessels are \u201cquiet, fast, well-armed, and equipped with advanced sensors\u201d.
