{"id":46232,"date":"2021-08-31T22:23:01","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T22:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=46232"},"modified":"2021-08-31T22:23:01","modified_gmt":"2021-08-31T22:23:01","slug":"defiant-biden-defends-afghanistan-withdrawal-as-criticism-mounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=46232","title":{"rendered":"Defiant Biden defends Afghanistan withdrawal as criticism mounts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"154.40777963894\">\n<p>Less than 24 hours after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/30\/us-completes-afghanistan-withdrawal-as-final-flight-leaves-kabul\">last United States military flight left Kabul<\/a>, President Joe Biden mounted a defiant defence of the withdrawal, saying it was \u201cthe right decision\u201d to end the US\u2019s 20-year military presence in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in a firm tone from the White House on Tuesday, Biden said keeping US troops in control of the airport in the Afghan capital beyond <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/7\/8\/mission-accomplished-us-speeds-afghanistan-withdrawal\">an August 31 withdrawal deadline<\/a> would have exposed them to heightened security risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me be clear: leaving August 31 is not due to an arbitrary deadline. It was designed to save American lives,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Biden cited his predecessor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/program\/talk-to-al-jazeera\/2020\/3\/7\/us-taliban-deal-can-peace-finally-come-to-afghanistan\">Donald Trump\u2019s deal<\/a> with the Taliban that ensured the withdrawal, but took responsibility for the final decision to pull all US troops out of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not going to extend this forever war, and I was not extending a forever exit,\u201d he said. \u201cThe decision to end the military lift operations at Kabul airport was based on unanimous recommendation of my civilian and military advisers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of the US Congress and Washington\u2019s European allies had urged the president to extend the evacuation operation at the airport past the end of the month. But Taliban officials had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/23\/afghan-guard-killed-in-armed-clash-at-kabul-airport-live-news\">warned of \u201cconsequences\u201d<\/a> if the US military did not fully withdraw as scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>After a virtual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/24\/biden-sticks-by-august-31-afghanistan-withdrawal-deadline\">Group of Seven (G7) meeting<\/a> last week, European Council President Charles Michel said the European Union stressed to Washington \u201cthe need to secure the airport as long as necessary to complete the operations\u201d \u2013 a call echoed by many US lawmakers, including several from Biden\u2019s own Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m certainly of the view that we maintain a military presence as long as it\u2019s necessary to get all US persons out and to meet our moral and ethical obligation to our Afghan partners,\u201d Adam Schiff, a Democrat who chairs the House Intelligence Committee, said earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban took over Afghanistan in a blitz earlier this month, reaching Kabul on August 15 as President Ashraf Ghani <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/15\/taliban-continues-advances-captures-key-city-of-jalalabad\">fled<\/a> the country and government forces collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Almost immediately after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/30\/us-completes-afghanistan-withdrawal-as-final-flight-leaves-kabul\">Pentagon announced<\/a> on Monday that the last US flight had left Afghanistan, Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy rallied GOP veterans in Congress to rebuke Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Congressman Dan Crenshaw, a war veteran who fought in Afghanistan, accused the administration of surrendering the country to the Taliban against Washington\u2019s national security interests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey love the slogan \u2018no more endless wars,&#8217;\u201d he said. \u201cWe made foreign policy based on an emotional slogan, and it has made America less safe, not more safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Biden argued that the Afghanistan exit was in Washington\u2019s strategic interests as the US shifts its foreign policy to focus on global competition with China and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing China or Russia would rather have, would want more in this competition than the United States to be bogged down another decade in Afghanistan,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Extraordinary success\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Biden also defended the way the withdrawal was carried out \u2013 despite scenes of chaos at the airport in Kabul. He <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/31\/taliban-declares-afghanistans-independence-after-us-withdrawal\">called<\/a> the evacuation mission an \u201cextraordinary success\u201d, saying the US has airlifted more than 120,000 people out of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe completed one of the biggest airlifts in history \u2026 That number is more than double what most experts thought were possible. No nation, no nation has ever done anything like it in all history,\u201d Biden said<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Alan Fisher, reporting from Washington, DC before Biden\u2019s speech, said the images from Kabul over the past two weeks were \u201chugely damaging\u201d for the US president.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere was a force which many politicians \u2026 would describe as the greatest military force ever assembled on the face of the earth, being humiliated by fighters who continued an insurgent war for 20 years,\u201d Fisher said. \u201cThis is not a good day for the American psyche.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Fisher pointed to a new poll by Pew Research showing that 54 percent of respondents still favour the decision to pull US troops out of Afghanistan. \u201cAnd it\u2019s that figure that Joe Biden will be thinking about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1504626\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-1504626\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/AP21242588137646.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C506\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\">A US military aircraft takes off from Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on August 30 [Wali Sabawoon\/AP Photo]<\/figure>\n<p>Earlier on Tuesday, Afghan-American activist Lida Azim <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/31\/us-has-moral-obligation-to-aid-afghanistan-afghan-americans-say\">warned<\/a> that the US troop withdrawal does not necessarily mean the war has ended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the United States is serious about ending a forever war, it must immediately end drone strikes and pay reparations and humanitarian aid to Afghan civil society that were left behind and betrayed by the United States,\u201d Azim said during a virtual news conference.<\/p>\n<p>Biden, however, made clear in his speech that the US military would continue to operate from the air in Afghanistan to act against \u201cterror threats\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will maintain the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan and other countries,\u201d the US president said. \u201cWe just don\u2019t need to fight a ground war to do it. We have what\u2019s called over-the-horizon capabilities, which means we can strike terrorists and targets without American boots on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, a US air strike that the Pentagon said targeted militants from Islamic State in Khorasan Province, ISKP (ISIS-K), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/30\/afghanistan-children-among-civilians-killed-in-us-drone-strike\">killed<\/a> 10 Afghan civilians, including several children, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/30\/an-afghan-family-killed-by-a-us-airstrike-in-kabul\">according to family members<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Less than 24 hours after the last United States military flight left Kabul, President Joe Biden mounted a defiant defence of the withdrawal, saying it was \u201cthe right decision\u201d to end the US\u2019s 20-year military presence in Afghanistan.
