{"id":46144,"date":"2021-08-16T00:23:54","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T00:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=46144"},"modified":"2021-08-16T00:23:54","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T00:23:54","slug":"turkey-evacuates-flood-victims-as-death-toll-hits-62","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=46144","title":{"rendered":"Turkey evacuates flood victims as death toll hits 62"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p class=\"article__subhead css-1u046kd-Article\">The Turkish disaster control agency says 52 people were killed in the province of Kastamonu, nine in Sinop and one in Bartin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"102.53149055283\">\n<p>Turkey has sent ships to help evacuate people and vehicles from a northern town on the Black Sea that was hard hit by flooding, as the death toll in the disaster rose on Sunday to at least 62, with many people still missing.<\/p>\n<p>Torrential <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/8\/11\/floods-hit-turkeys-north-after-south-ravaged-by-wildfires\">rains pounded<\/a> the country\u2019s northwestern Black Sea provinces on Wednesday, causing flooding that demolished homes, severed bridges, swept away cars and rendered numerous roads impassable.<\/p>\n<p>The Turkish disaster agency AFAD said 52 people were killed in the province of Kastamonu, nine in Sinop and one in Bartin.<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement by the governor\u2019s office in Bartin, 13 bridges were destroyed in the flood, while at least 45 buildings were heavily damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey\u2019s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said 77 people were still missing in the flooding. Eight remained hospitalised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe delivered 20 tonnes of food yesterday and today by helicopter alone,\u201d Soylu said on Sunday, adding that officials were trying to meet the needs of victims \u2013 from funerals to damage assessment.<\/p>\n<p>Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum said there were at least 454 severely damaged and ruined buildings in the three provinces, adding that authorities were working on building new structures within the next year.<\/p>\n<p>More than 8,000 workers are conducting relief work in the affected areas, the disaster management agency said, while at least 2,370 people were evacuated to safe areas by helicopters and boats.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1490077\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-arc-image-770 wp-image-1490077\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/2021-08-14T122840Z_1183458761_RC205P9WXJZU_RTRMADP_3_CLIMATE-FLOODS-TURKEY.jpg?w=770&#038;resize=770%2C513\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\">A view of a partially collapsed building, as the area was hit by flash floods that swept through towns in the Turkish Black Sea region, in the town of Bozkurt, in Kastamonu province [File: Mehmet Emin Caliskan\/Reuters]<\/figure>\n<p>Emergency crews across the region kept up the search for the missing amid the many buildings that have partially collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Drone footage by Reuters news agency showed massive damage in the town of Bozkurt in Kastamonu province.
