\u201cAll you need is a weekend\u2019s worth of time and $50 for the materials\u201d.<\/p>\n

That was the advice of Stephan Balliet, a German Neo-Nazi who has been sentenced to life in prison for killing two people after attempting to attack a synagogue in the city of Halle on October 9, 2019.<\/p>\n

Balliet, 27, was referring to 3D-printed firearms. In the same post, on the now-defunct far-right messaging board, Meguca, Balliet wrote, just minutes before carrying out his attack: \u201cOf course, there are dozens of other designs out there, so what\u2019s special with mine? Simple, I prefer live testing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then provided a link to a livestream on the gaming platform, Twitch, which broadcast his gun attack.<\/p>\n

In his manifesto, which was also uploaded onto Meguca, apart from his objective of trying to \u201ckill as many anti-Whites as possible, jews preferred\u201d, Balliet also stated that he wanted to \u201cprove the viability of improvised weapons\u201d.<\/p>\n

Among the cache of firearms Balliet had in Halle was a sub-machine gun that had 3D-printed plastic components, such as the magazine and grip.<\/p>\n

Balliet\u2019s attack is seen as a breakthrough moment among cases of far-right \u201cextremism\u201d, described<\/a> by several experts as being the first perpetrator that had made and used a weapon from 3D-printed elements.<\/p>\n

3D printed firearms are a growing concern for authorities tasked with tackling \u2018extremism\u2019 in Europe [Philip Boyce\/Forensic Equity]<\/figure>\n

The world\u2019s first ever gun to be made from a 3D printer was built in 2013 by Cody Wilson, a 25-year-old gun rights activist in the United States.<\/p>\n

Ballistics and firearms expert Phillip Boyce, from the British-based firm Forensic Equity, said 3D printed guns have evolved since then, despite the \u201cstandard and quality\u201d remaining \u201cabout the same\u201d, with various designs now available.<\/p>\n

It is no longer just handguns that can be produced from a 3D printer, Boyce said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have a fully automatic AR15 rifle, or a fully automatic AK47. And normally, those fully automatic weapons have got steel barrels, but the rest of it is plastic,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

3D-printed guns becoming \u2018more accessible\u2019<\/h2>\n

Since 2019, there has been an increase in the number of arrests and convictions in a number of European countries and elsewhere of people downloading and or trying to build their own 3D-printed guns. And so far, most seem to have far-right links, experts say.<\/p>\n

In April this year, Spanish police raided a workshop that was producing 3D-printed weapons in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. They recovered two 3D printers, a replica assault rifle and several gun barrels. Officers said they had also found manuals on urban guerrilla warfare and white supremacist literature. The owner of the workshop was arrested and charged with illegal possession of weapons.<\/p>\n

Since 2019, there has been a surge of arrests and convictions of people downloading and\/or trying to build their own 3D-printed weapons [Philip Boyce\/Forensic Equity]<\/figure>\n

The next month, two men and a woman were arrested in the British town of Keighley, as part of an investigation into \u201cright-wing terrorism\u201d, police said. All three were charged with possessing components of a 3D-printed firearm. One of the suspects faces an additional charge of disseminating an image of the Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh.<\/p>\n

And in June, a 15-year-old British girl from Derbyshire was charged with six terror offences, including the possession of a manual on how to make a firearm from a 3D printer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology is becoming more accessible,\u201d said Rajan Basra, senior research fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation at King\u2019s College London, explaining the rising interest in 3D-printed guns.<\/p>\n

In addition, Basra said, Baillet\u2019s attack in Halle \u201chelped to introduce that idea that you could do something on your own\u201d, including by accessing internet forums where blueprints can be found.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of far-right communities online where this material is being shared,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Boyce, from Forensic Equity, concurred that there is a growing trend in criminals and far-right \u201cextremists\u201d producing weapons from 3D printers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is very worrying because in the UK it\u2019s very difficult for criminals to acquire real guns. But my colleagues in the Metropolitan Police have told me they\u2019re seeing more 3D printed guns,\u201d Boyce said.<\/p>\n

In a statement to Al Jazeera, the United Kingdom\u2019s National Crime Agency said it is \u201cclosely monitoring the impact of 3D guns and their unique vulnerabilities, working closely with partners to suppress the availability of illegal firearms in the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n

Those arrested and convicted for manufacturing 3D-printed firearms so far have been described as far-right extremists [Philip Boyce\/Forensic Equity]<\/figure>\n

Concern for the future<\/h2>\n

But in a world where almost anything can be bought, why would criminals go to the trouble of making a gun instead of just paying for one?<\/p>\n

Basra said it is all about access.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo buy a gun, at least in Europe, you need access to the illicit firearms market \u2013 and not everyone has those connections that give you that access. So then you have to come up with alternative means.\u201d<\/p>\n

The way around this, Boyce said, was to \u201ceither convert a blank firearm or 3D-print a gun. And in terms of money, it\u2019s going to cost you pennies, if not a few pounds, to produce a good working 3D printed gun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut if you want, say a pistol or revolver on the black market that\u2019s going to cost you somewhere in the region of \u00a35,000 [$6,950] for the real thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Basra warned the increasing use of plastic guns, which have no serial numbers, could be a glimpse into the future of attacks in Europe.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the real worry,\u201d he said. \u201cThe good thing is, is that police forces across Europe appear to be switched onto this problem,\u201d he added, pointing to the arrests in Spain and the UK.<\/p>\n
