{"id":42698,"date":"2020-05-22T13:23:08","date_gmt":"2020-05-22T13:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=42698"},"modified":"2020-05-22T13:23:08","modified_gmt":"2020-05-22T13:23:08","slug":"pakistan-passenger-plane-crashes-in-southern-city-of-karachi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=42698","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan passenger plane crashes in southern city of Karachi"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"142.02739726027\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">A passenger plane with nearly 100 people on board has crashed in a residential area in the Pakistani city of Karachi, the country&#8217;s civil aviation agency said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane was close to landing at Karachi&#8217;s Jinnah International Airport when it came down among houses, sending plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen from some distance away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said there were 91 passengers and seven crew on board the flight, which lost contact with air traffic control just after 2:30pm (09:30 GMT). <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is too early to comment on the cause of the crash,&#8221; he told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>Abdul Sattar Khokhar, <span>the spokesman for the country&#8217;s aviation authority<\/span>, said the Airbus A320 was travelling from Lahore to Karachi, the country&#8217;s largest city.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"3.1985294117647\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Its so heartbreaking and Devastating\ud83d\udc94<br \/>Ya Allah Reham\ud83d\ude4f<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/planecrash?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#planecrash<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9SU1v4i5O8\">pic.twitter.com\/9SU1v4i5O8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ZaynArshad (@Zayyn007) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Zayyn007\/status\/1263804978499641344?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 22, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Flight PK8303\u00a0<\/span>was due to land in Karachi\u00a0at 14:45 local time (09:45 GMT).<\/p>\n<p>The Pakistan military said security forces had been deployed to the area and helicopters were being used to survey the damage and help ongoing rescue operations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our plane A320 which was coming from Lahore to Karachi &#8230; the last words for the pilot were that there is a technical problem and he was told on final approach that he has both runways available to him. But the pilot indicated that he wanted to go around,&#8221; PIA CEO Arshad Malik said in a video message released after the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Sindh provincial health minister Azra Pechucho said at least 11 bodies and six wounded people had been taken to Karachi&#8217;s main government hospital &#8211; but it was unclear if they were passengers or people on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eleven dead bodies have been brought here and six wounded have been brought here,&#8221; she said, speaking at Karachi&#8217;s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC). &#8220;Of the six [wounded], four are stable and two are burns cases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are doing DNA testing of the dead bodies so that they can be identified and they can be given to their families.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span><span>Earlier, a relative of a passenger on board told Al Jazeera she was able to contact him after the crash.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>Images shown on national television showed plumes of smoke above congested residential\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>apartment buildings, with fire trucks en route to the scene of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>Television footage from the scene showed a number of ambulances unable to make progress in the narrow lanes of the residential neighbourhood where the crash took place, as people crowded in towards the site.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was &#8220;shocked and saddened&#8221; by the crash, tweeting that he was in touch with the state airline&#8217;s chief executive. &#8220;Prayers &#038; condolences go to families of the deceased,&#8221; said Khan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2020\/5\/22\/060ea86ace19477e9fccb3e8565363a5_18.jpg\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Rescue workers move a body from the site after a Pakistan International Airlines aircraft after crashed at a residential area in Karachi on May 22, 2020.
