{"id":42156,"date":"2020-01-01T14:22:22","date_gmt":"2020-01-01T14:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=42156"},"modified":"2020-01-01T14:22:22","modified_gmt":"2020-01-01T14:22:22","slug":"angola-hits-ex-leader-dos-santoss-daughter-with-asset-freeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=42156","title":{"rendered":"Angola hits ex-leader dos Santos&#8217;s daughter with asset freeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"107.87290379523\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/angola.html\">Angola<\/a> has frozen the assets of Isabel dos Santos, the billionaire daughter of former Angolan President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/jose-eduardo-dos-santos.html\">Jose Eduardo dos Santos<\/a> in a sign that President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/09\/angola-swears-joao-lourenco-president-170926140349846.html\">Joao Lourenco<\/a> is taking a tougher line against the former first family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Isabel dos Santos &#8211; nicknamed the Princess &#8211;<span>\u00a0denied allegations of financial irregularities on Tuesday, calling the claims &#8220;politically motivated&#8221;. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>More:<\/h4>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>She is under investigation for alleged irregularities involving state companies including the OPEC nation&#8217;s giant state oil company Sonangol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The allegations are riddled with &#8220;obvious lies, errors and omissions&#8221;, she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This court decision, which is the outcome of an injunction that was not communicated to the parties, is clearly arbitrary and politically motivated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Isabel later told Reuters news agency<span>\u00a0that she had never been summoned or questioned by an Angolan court or prosecutors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Fall from grace<\/h2>\n<p>Her father ruled Angola for 38 years &#8211; a time widely associated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/corruption.html\">corruption<\/a> and nepotism &#8211; until Lourenco succeeded him in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking power, Lourenco has been trying to erase the influence of his predecessor and reform sub-Saharan Africa&#8217;s third-largest economy, which continues to contract.<\/p>\n<p>Isabel, like most of the dos Santos family, left Angola, claiming she faced death threats after her father stepped down.<\/p>\n<p>She was appointed head of Sonangol in 2016 but was forced out the following year, in one of the first acts undertaken by Lourenco to remove dos Santos&#8217;s relatives from power.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An Angolan court, acting as part of the corruption investigation, on December 23 froze bank accounts belonging to dos Santos and her husband Sindika Dokolo.<\/p>\n<p>Their holdings in several Angolan companies, including the telecoms firm Unitel and cement company Cimangola, have also been frozen, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The court&#8217;s decision also applies to a Portuguese businessman, Mario da Silva.<\/p>\n<p>His family accuses Lourenco&#8217;s government of persecution.<\/p>\n<p>The former president&#8217;s son, Jose Filomeno dos Santos, 41, who is Isabel&#8217;s half-brother, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/09\/angola-president-son-remanded-corruption-charge-180925063903854.html\">went on trial<\/a> in early December for alleged corruption.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Angola has frozen the assets of Isabel dos Santos, the billionaire daughter of former Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos in a sign that President Joao Lourenco is taking a tougher line against the former first family.
