Qatar wins first Asian football title <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In a tournament that was played against the backdrop of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/06\/qatar-blockade-gulf-crisis-190604220901644.html\">regional political dispute<\/a>, Qatar&#8217;s national football team defied odds and exceeded expectations at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/inpictures\/qatar-wins-major-football-title-beating-japan-190201162701218.html\">AFC Asian Cup<\/a> in the United Arab Emirates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">UAE<\/a>) earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>The Maroons <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/qatar-stun-japan-lift-maiden-asian-cup-title-190201151119965.html\">stunned<\/a> four-time champions Japan 3-1 in the final on February 1 to lift their maiden trophy at the continental tournament.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/2\/3\/bbf2a29232c14321b3c7c85e738be367_8.jpg\" readability=\"8\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Qatar welcomes Asian Cup football champions home [Sorin Furcoi\/Al Jazeera]\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/2\/3\/bbf2a29232c14321b3c7c85e738be367_8.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Qatar welcomes Asian Cup football champions home [Sorin Furcoi\/Al Jazeera]\"><\/div>\n<p>Qatar&#8217;s football team was given a hero&#8217;s welcome back in Doha after their triumphant Asian Cup campaign [Sorin Furcoi\/Al Jazeera]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>They also beat Saudi Arabia, Iraq, South Korea and hosts UAE en route to the title.<\/p>\n<p>Qatari striker Almoez Ali set an Asian Cup record of nine goals to go home with the best player award.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. BeoutQ: Saudi-Qatar piracy row<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Off the field, a two-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/10\/qatar-bein-seeks-1bn-compensation-saudi-tv-sport-piracy-181001140108546.html\">broadcasting row<\/a> between Qatar&#8217;s beIN Sports and a Saudi pirate channel beoutQ deepened.<\/p>\n<p>A number of football bodies &#8211; including football&#8217;s world governing body FIFA and Europe&#8217;s UEFA &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/asian-football-confederation-steps-fight-beoutq-piracy-190219183100224.html\">pursued<\/a> legal action in Saudi Arabia against the pirate outfit.<\/p>\n<p>In September, an Al Jazeera Arabic investigation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/09\/video-reveals-location-beoutq-piracy-channel-hq-riyadh-190923101255265.html\">revealed<\/a> the exact location of beoutQ&#8217;s headquarters in the al-Qirawan district of the Saudi capital, Riyadh.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, beIN Media Group, which holds exclusive rights to broadcast major international sports events to the MENA region, has fallen victim of beoutQ, which has been stealing its signal by broadcasting it as its own, complete with superimposed on-air logos.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Golden year for Liverpool&#8217;s Salah<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It was a memorable year for English football club <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/12\/fifa-club-world-cup-liverpool-crowned-time-champions-191221095048774.html\">Liverpool<\/a> as well as its star striker Mohamed Salah.<\/p>\n<p>The Egyptian footballer reached a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/04\/footballer-mohamed-salah-scores-50th-goal-liverpool-190406074448390.html\">landmark feat<\/a>\u00a0of 50 Premier League goals for his team, becoming the eighth Liverpool player to join the elite club.<\/p>\n<p>But his half-century arrived in only 69 games, three fewer than Fernando Torres, the previous quickest to the mark.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"2.3780487804878\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\">\ud83c\udfc6\ud83c\udfc6 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1wdz98Jnjj\">pic.twitter.com\/1wdz98Jnjj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mohamed Salah (@MoSalah) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MoSalah\/status\/1208531755365490688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 21, 2019<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 27-year-old also steered the Reds to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/06\/liverpool-fc-beat-tottenham-win-champions-league-trophy-190601205146349.html\">sixth<\/a> European Champions League title in June and their first FIFA Club World Cup trophy in Qatar in December.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Iranian women attend historic football match<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>For the first time in nearly 40 years, Iranian women were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/10\/iran-women-attend-historic-match-191009090321072.html\">allowed<\/a> to freely attend a men&#8217;s football match in the capital, Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,000 female fans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/10\/iranian-women-attend-football-match-40-years-191010160637819.html\">watched<\/a> <span>from a special women-only section in Tehran&#8217;s Azadi Stadium as\u00a0<\/span>their national men&#8217;s team beat Cambodia 14-0 in a World Cup qualifying match<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31.5\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/10\/10\/bbb66b2f8b4844a483ab11f8b0b2382e_8.jpg\" readability=\"8\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Iranian women cheer during the FIFIA World Cup qualification match between Iran and Cambodia, at the Azadi stadium in Tehran, Iran, 10 October 2019.
