{"id":42036,"date":"2019-12-22T19:22:17","date_gmt":"2019-12-22T19:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=42036"},"modified":"2019-12-22T19:22:17","modified_gmt":"2019-12-22T19:22:17","slug":"erdogan-turkey-will-increase-military-support-to-gna-if-needed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=42036","title":{"rendered":"Erdogan: Turkey will increase military support to GNA if needed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"141.48762109795\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/recep-tayyip-erdogan.html\">Recep Tayyip Erdogan<\/a><span>\u00a0has said that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/turkey.html\">Turkey<\/a>\u00a0will increase its military support to the internationally recognised government of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/libya.html\">Libya<\/a> if necessary, a day after the Turkish parliament ratified a security and military cooperation deal signed between Ankara and Tripoli last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;We will evaluate all kinds of military support including ground, marine and air options if necessary,&#8221; Erdogan said during a speech on Sunday in the northwestern province of Kocaeli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>More:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turkey backs Fayez al-Serraj&#8217;s Government of National Accord (GNA) in Libya, which has been torn by factional conflict since 2011, and has already sent military supplies to the GNA despite a United Nations arms embargo, according to a report by UN experts seen by Reuters last month.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey has also said it could deploy troops to Libya if the GNA makes such a request.<\/p>\n<p>The GNA has been fighting a months-long offensive by\u00a0Libyan renegade military commander\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/khalifa-haftar.html\">Khalifa Haftar<\/a> forces based in the east of the country. Haftar&#8217;s forces have received support from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>, the United Arab Emirates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">UAE<\/a>), Jordan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/russia.html\">Russia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Erdogan also said Turkey had recently provided &#8220;very serious&#8221; support to the GNA, adding Libya was a country Turkey would support &#8220;with its life&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are supporting an illegal warlord, who is the pawn of certain nations, instead of the UN-recognised government,&#8221; Erdogan said, in an apparent reference to Haftar and the countries who support him.<\/p>\n<h2>Support for GNA<\/h2>\n<p>Last month, Turkey and the GNA signed an accord to boost military cooperation and a separate deal on maritime boundaries, which has enraged Greece.<\/p>\n<p>Referring to the deal, Erdogan said on Sunday that Turkey will &#8220;absolutely&#8221; not turn back from its agreements with Libya.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobody should come to us with attempts to exclude us, trap us in our own shores or steal our economic interests,&#8221; Erdogan said. &#8220;We have no intention of starting conflicts with anyone for no reason, or robbing anyone of their rights,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those who oppose us have no sense of rights, law, justice, ethics or mercy,&#8221; Erdogan said, referring to Greece, Israel and Egypt, who have opposed the maritime accord.<\/p>\n<p>Ankara and Athens have been at odds over hydrocarbon resources off the coast of the divided island of Cyprus.<\/p>\n<p>While Greece has said the accord violates international law, Turkey has rejected those accusations, saying it aims to protect its rights in the eastern Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<h2>Turkish ship towed<\/h2>\n<p>Erdogan&#8217;s announcement comes after forces loyal to Haftar\u00a0towed a Grenada-flagged ship with\u00a0Turkish crew off the Libyan coast, a spokesman said on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>A naval combat vessel belonging to Haftar&#8217;s\u00a0self-styled eastern Libyan National Army (LNA)\u00a0stopped the ship in Libyan territorial waters off the eastern city of Derna and towed it to Ras El Hilal port &#8220;for inspection and to verify its cargo&#8221;, LNA spokesperson\u00a0Ahmed Mismari\u00a0said without giving further details.<\/p>\n<p>The eastern forces provided Reuters News Agency with a video that shows Libyan navy forces stopping the ship and questioning three crew members.
