Looking the other way, rolling hills lead to England.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">As the United Kingdom faces its most momentous election in recent history, Scotland is grappling with which view to set its sights on.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"cp-video-html ivanim-fade js-video-play-in-view  is-inview\" data-video-target=\"loop_1\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">For Scottish voters, a key issue in the December 12 general election will be whether, in the long term, they want to remain part of the UK or to break away and become an independent country.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c26\">\u201cIndependence is not about \u2018oh we hate the English,\u2019\u201d says 22-year-old Scot and pro-independence campaigner Iona Fraser-Collins. \u201cIt\u2019s about us wanting to be in charge of our own laws, and England being in charge of its own laws.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>Scotland rejected independence at a 2014 referendum, 55% to 45%.\u00a0But circumstances have changed dramatically since then, according to the Scottish National Party (SNP) &#8212; the third-largest party in the UK Parliament.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"30.494845360825\">\n<p>In 2016 Scots<span class=\"c3\"><a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.electoralcommission.org.uk\/who-we-are-and-what-we-do\/elections-and-referendums\/past-elections-and-referendums\/eu-referendum\/results-and-turnout-eu-referendum&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889770000\">voted overwhelmingly<\/a><\/span>\u00a0to remain in the European Union. It\u2019s a prospect Labour hasn\u2019t ruled out completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34.514285714286\">\n<p>Support for Scottish independence has crept up slightly in the last five years and is now<a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/whatscotlandthinks.org\/questions\/how-would-you-vote-in-the-in-a-scottish-independence-referendum-if-held-now-ask%23table&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889772000\"><\/a><span class=\"c3\"><a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/whatscotlandthinks.org\/questions\/how-would-you-vote-in-the-in-a-scottish-independence-referendum-if-held-now-ask%23table&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889773000\">neck-and-neck<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0with those who favor remaining part of the union. With many seats in Scotland resting on razor-thin margins, this will be the scene of a fierce battle that could have major consequences for the future of the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Student power<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">No battle will be fiercer than that fought in the constituency of North East Fife. This is the most marginal seat in the UK: In the 2017 election, the SNP won by just two votes against the Liberal Democrats.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Both the SNP and Lib Dems want to stop Brexit and both are fighting for pro-European voters. Their methods though, are starkly different.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>The SNP believes an independent Scotland is the best way of staying in the EU; the Lib Dems say Scotland is stronger in Europe<span class=\"c19\">and<\/span><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_3\">\n<div id=\"img_3\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>St Andrews students stream through St Salvator\u2019s Quadrangle. Over 9,000 students attend the university, accounting for more than half the town\u2019s population.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">The SNP currently controls 35 of Scotland\u2019s 59 constituencies -\u2013 every seat they could gain in this election would strengthen their negotiating hand for an independence referendum.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">At the heart of North East Fife is the university town of St Andrews.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>It\u2019s best known abroad as the place where Prince William started dating Kate, and as the \u201chome of golf\u201d thanks to the 600-year-old course that dominates the rugged landscape.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_4\">\n<div id=\"img_4\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>A passerby crosses the iconic Swilcan Bridge at St Andrews\u2019 Old Course, regarded as the \u2018Home of Golf\u2019. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">The town\u2019s prestigious university also has a reputation, Scottish commentators told CNN, as the place where wealthy English and American students go when they don\u2019t get into Oxford or Cambridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Students loom large here; cycling down pretty streets and teeming out of grand stone university buildings. They gather outside cafes handing out political flyers, all too aware that in a constituency where just two votes decided the winner last time around, they could make all the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"38\">\n<p><span class=\"c14\"><\/span><span class=\"c0\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty unusual for there to be an election during term time,\u201d says the university\u2019s student president, Jamie Rodney, who has been part of a campus-wide drive encouraging young people to register to vote. \u201cSo students have a real opportunity this year to potentially swing the result of the whole election.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_6\">\n<div id=\"img_5\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_10000\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/10000.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>\u201cThere tends to be a vicious cycle &#8212; students don&#8217;t vote, so politicians tend not to target them with policies,\u201d says Student Association President Jamie Rodney.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"img_6\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_10000\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/10000.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>\u201cThere is a new generation that is newly able to vote,\u201d says Art History lecturer Stephanie O\u2019Rourke. \u201cWe want to make sure that we\u2019re encouraging them to participate.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>\u2018Second class country\u2019<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"28.245614035088\">\n<p>Some, like the university\u2019s<a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.yourunion.net\/activities\/society\/6887\/&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889777000\"><\/a><span class=\"c3\"><a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.yourunion.net\/activities\/society\/6887\/&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889778000\">pro-independence union<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c0\">, are adamant about the direction they want that swing to take.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Every Tuesday evening the students meet at one of the town\u2019s many traditional pubs. They come armed with clipboards and political buttons, eschewing pints of beer for tea and Coca-Cola.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">A handful of the group were too young to vote in the 2016 EU referendum. Even those who did vote Remain feel they\u2019ve been flung under a Brexit bus that is beyond their control.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">\u201cBrexit is just a prime example of Scotland getting the exact opposite of what it voted for,\u201d says 24-year-old Harry Stage, his black curls bobbing with emphasis.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_7\">\n<div id=\"img_7\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>Members from St Andrews University Students For Independence (STAUSFI) gather in the town\u2019s Whey Pat Tavern. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">\u201cWhen your mandate is not accepted, or your people are not listened to, then how can you want to stay part of that union?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">The students say Scotland feels like a \u201csecond-class country\u201d where Westminster overlords dictate everything from their finance to defense policies. \u201cWe want to sit next to England at the table,\u201d says Stage, \u201crather than in the back taking the scraps they can throw.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">They point to the UK\u2019s Trident nuclear weapons, carried by submarines based on Scotland\u2019s west coast, as an example of the \u201cdouble standards\u201d and \u201ccondescending nature\u201d of Westminster lawmakers towards their country.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">\u201cYou couldn\u2019t do it in the Thames (in London) because it\u2019s too much of a threat to human life,\u201d says Stage. \u201cBut what\u2019s a trident bomb going to do amongst lochs and glens and Glasgow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_8\">\n<div id=\"img_8\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6677\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6677.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>STAUSFI students meet over tea to\u00a0organise bake sales and quiz nights as a way of getting their political message out.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Scotland\u2019s first minister and the leader of the SNP, Nicola Sturgeon, has said scrapping Trident would be one of her party\u2019s key demands if Labour wanted its support in a minority government.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">It\u2019s a demand that\u2019s unlikely to be met. Labour has pledged to renew the Trident program, despite its leader Jeremy Corbyn being a longstanding critic of nuclear weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Of course, there\u2019s no guarantee that an independent Scotland would automatically be welcomed back into the EU. Even its national deficit of 7% (EU member states must have deficits below 3%) wouldn\u2019t hold Scotland back, she told the BBC during a live leaders\u2019 debate last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Instead, she said, the deficit would drop under an independent Scotland finally able to fully control its finances.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">In any case, \u201cwe won\u2019t be in the EU come January,\u201d says Stage, in between sips of tea. \u201cSo, what do we have to lose?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"38\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">In another pub down the road, the SNP incumbent in this constituency, Stephen Gethins, rearranges himself on a plush red barstool. Like his young supporters, he opts for a tall glass of water over anything stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">In the last election here in 2017 Gethins won by just two votes, following three recounts, and admits \u201cthere was quite a lot of stuff going on at the time\u201d given his wife had just had their baby the week before.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_11\">\n<div id=\"img_11\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_14976\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/14976.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>\u201dHistorically, Scotland&#8217;s been a nation at the heart of Europe,\u201d says North East Fife Stephen Gethins. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">This election, Gethins sticks closely to the SNP script, saying Scotland\u2019s departure from the UK would be nothing like England\u2019s shambolic exit from the EU.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">\u201cIt\u2019s Brexit which is isolationist, which takes us into the unknown,\u201d says Gethins. Her husband is an SNP member, though she\u2019s quick to laugh off politically-induced marital strife.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Among those hitting the pavements alongside Chamberlain are students Joseph Luke, 20, and Alex Whitman, 21. Both are English, which they say \u201clends itself to unionism a little bit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_14\">\n<div id=\"img_14\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>Students Joseph Luke and Alex Whitman coordinate while canvassing for Wendy Chamberlain.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">They now live in St Andrews and \u201cjust because we were born in England doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t get a say,\u201d says Luke.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">He has relatives in both countries and says he doesn\u2019t want to cross a hard border \u201cjust to see my family.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Knife-edge margin<\/h2>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>What makes elections in Scotland particularly nail-biting is the large proportion of marginal seats. Of the top 10 most marginal seats in the UK,<a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/researchbriefings.parliament.uk\/ResearchBriefing\/Summary\/CBP-8067&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889788000\"><\/a><span class=\"c3\"><a class=\"c7\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/researchbriefings.parliament.uk\/ResearchBriefing\/Summary\/CBP-8067&#038;sa=D&#038;ust=1575309889788000\">four are in Scotland.<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c0\">\u00a0Experts say that\u2019s largely down to a four-party system not seen in England.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Even in a close constituency like North East Fife, some voters are still backing outside parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Student Lottie Doherty, 21, says she\u2019ll be voting Labour because she supports staying in the EU and the UK, but believes the Lib Dem policy on revoking Brexit without a second referendum is \u201cundemocratic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_15\">\n<div id=\"img_15\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>Chair of St Andrews University Labour Society, Lottie Doherty, right, hands out flyers on how to register to vote.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Labour came a distant fourth in the last election here. This year\u2019s candidate, Wendy Haynes, says her party\u2019s aim is to create a radically different UK, one that Scotland will want to be part of.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Meanwhile, kilt shop owner Robert Brown says he\u2019ll be backing the Conservatives because they \u201csupport small businesses\u201d like his. Most of Brown\u2019s customers come from Scotland or America, where he says kilts are a popular choice for weddings.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">He gets very little business from Europe, and he voted to Leave in the EU referendum. Despite the political turmoil of the ensuing three years, Brown believes Boris Johnson is the prime minister to finally deliver Brexit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Surrounded by rows and rows of multicolored kilts, fox furs, and traditional silver brooches, Brown scoffs at the prospect of ever voting SNP.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_16\">\n<div id=\"img_16\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>The Tories are the best out of a bad bunch,\u201d says 55-year-old kilt shop owner Robert Brown. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Scotland isn\u2019t traditional territory for the Conservatives. But in the last few years the party has made significant gains while Labour, which had triumphed here since the 1960s, lost huge swaths of voters to a reinvigorated SNP.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Even the North East Fife\u2019s Conservative candidate, Tony Miklinski, admits that \u201cBoris does alienate some Scottish voters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">The Prime Minister is \u201ceasily portrayed as the cartoon character, Eton-educated toff who\u2019s out of touch with the working class, and with the people of Scotland.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_17\">\n<div id=\"img_17\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6672\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6672.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>A view of the North Sea stretches out from St Andrews\u2019 pier towards Europe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">But the \u201cbottom line,\u201d according to Miklinksi, is that a Conservative majority is the only way to resolve the \u201clogjam in Westminster\u201d and deliver Brexit. And ensure the SNP doesn\u2019t get a second Scottish referendum.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">With just over a week until the election, opinion polls are predicting a Conservative majority in the UK. That said, the polls predicted the same outcome in the 2017 election \u2013 instead, the Tories failed to achieve that majority.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Some, like 26-year-old fisherman Lee Gardner, still aren\u2019t sure who they\u2019ll vote for. Britain\u2019s fishing industry has been vocal in favor of leaving the EU. Nonetheless Gardner voted Remain, and says he loves \u201ctraveling to Europe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"imgCont\" id=\"nCont_18\">\n<div id=\"img_18\" class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade rt_6677\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\"><picture class=\"u-full-width\"><!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" class=\"scMobile\" ><source class=\"scDesk\" ><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"scDesk\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/12\/world\/uk-election-scottish-independence\/media\/images\/6677.png\" alt=\"\/\"><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption>\u201cA lot of people who didn\u2019t vote in the last election are kicking themselves,\u201d says Lobster fisherman Lee Gardner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">\u201cAnyway,\u201d he adds with a cheeky smile, \u201cI haven\u2019t been a fisherman that long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p><span class=\"c0\">Hauling lobsters onto his family\u2019s boat in St Andrews\u2019 harbor, Gardner stands on the cliff edge.
