{"id":41215,"date":"2019-10-16T03:23:11","date_gmt":"2019-10-16T03:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=41215"},"modified":"2019-10-16T03:23:11","modified_gmt":"2019-10-16T03:23:11","slug":"us-lawmakers-set-measure-opposing-trump-on-syria-troop-withdrawal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=41215","title":{"rendered":"US lawmakers set measure opposing Trump on Syria troop withdrawal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"90\">\n<p>\nANKARA: Three more countries halted arms sales to Turkey on Tuesday as pressure mounted on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the Turkish invasion of northeast Syria.<\/p>\n<p>\nBritain, Spain and Sweden joined Germany and France in suspending military exports, and the US threatened Ankara with more sanctions unless Erdogan halts the offensive.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe will keep our defense exports to Turkey under very careful and continual review,\u201d British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said. \u201cNo further export licenses to Turkey for items which might be used in military operations in Syria will be granted while we conduct that review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nSpain, a major arms exporter to Turkey, urged Erdogan to \u201cput an end to this military operation\u201d because it endangered regional stability, increased the number of refugees and threatened Syria\u2019s territorial integrity.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cIn coordination with its EU partners, Spain will deny new export licenses for military equipment that can be used in the operation in Syria,\u201d the Foreign Ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>\nSweden also halted exports of military combat equipment. \u201cTwo permits that have been active have now been recalled,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"injected-block block-wrapper block-custom-bg padding-1 bottom-spacer--m\">\n<p><h4>\n<span class=\"chars-style\">BACK<\/span>GROUND<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"block-content\" readability=\"32\">\n<div class=\"with-separator\" readability=\"9\">\n<p>\nVice President Mike Pence will hold talks with Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday, and the UN Security Council will discuss the invasion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nErdogan\u2019s assault against Kurdish forces, launched last week, has prompted a chorus of international condemnation. \u201cMany NATO allies are very critical and are condemning the military operation in northern Syria,\u201d said Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO, the Western military alliance of which Turkey is a member.<\/p>\n<p>\nRussia\u2019s presidential envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, said Turkey had no right to deploy its forces in Syria permanently, and Moscow had not approved the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\nUS President Donald Trump imposed new sanctions on Turkey on Monday, and on Tuesday the US said more sanctions would follow unless the invasion was halted.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe plan is to continue the pressure on Turkey as we evaluate our chances to return the relationship to normal, a major element of that return to normal would be a cease-fire,\u201d a senior administration official said. \u201cAnd by cease-fire what I mean is forces on the ground stop moving on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nVice President Mike Pence will hold talks with Erdogan in Ankara on Wednesday, and the UN Security Council will discuss the invasion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ANKARA: Three more countries halted arms sales to Turkey on Tuesday as pressure mounted on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the Turkish invasion of northeast Syria.
