{"id":41067,"date":"2019-10-04T07:22:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T07:22:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=41067"},"modified":"2019-10-04T07:22:30","modified_gmt":"2019-10-04T07:22:30","slug":"iraqs-pm-calls-for-talks-as-thousands-of-protesters-defy-curfew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=41067","title":{"rendered":"Iraq&#8217;s PM calls for talks as thousands of protesters defy curfew"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"173.775683118\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iraq.html\">Iraq<\/a>&#8216;s Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi has called for dialogue after a third consecutive day of deadly anti-government protests in the capital, Baghdad, and several southern cities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a statement quoted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alsumaria.tv\/news\/%D9%85%D8%AD%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AA\/320575\/alsumaria-article\" target=\"_blank\">local media<\/a> on Thursday, Abdul Mahdi&#8217;s office said the prime minister was &#8220;<span>continuing contacts&#8221; with protesters in a bid to end the political crisis and &#8220;return to normal life&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Abdul Mahdi was prepared to meet with &#8220;representatives of peaceful demonstrators to consider their legitimate demands&#8221;, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came as 4,000 protesters rallied in Baghdad, defying a\u00a0government-enforced curfew\u00a0to call again for\u00a0improved services, more jobs and an end to widespread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/corruption.html\">corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The crowds gathered in Baghdad&#8217;s Tayaran Square and attempted to march onto the central Tahrir Square only to be met with open fire and heavy tear gas. Police also used live ammunition in the Zafaraniya district of Baghdad and there were protests in the northwestern Shula district.<\/p>\n<p>The demonstrations, which\u00a0appear to be independent of any political party, started in the capital on Tuesday, and later spread to cities across Iraq&#8217;s mainly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/shia.html\">Shia<\/a> south.\u00a0<span>At least 31 people have been killed in three days of clashes<span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those demonstrating have directed their anger at Abdul Mahdi&#8217;s year-old government and a wider political class they accuse of being corrupt and doing nothing to improve their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said the protests &#8220;pose the biggest challenge yet to Abdul Mahdi, but it&#8217;s unclear how he can stop the outpouring of anger against his rule, with no apparent leaders of protesters to negotiate with&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/10\/3\/d72abb50803d49dc9c767dcce95ae3f8_18.jpg\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Demonstrators gather at a protest during a curfew, two days after the nationwide anti-government protests turned violent, in Baghdad, Iraq October 3, 2019. REUTERS\/Thaier al-Sudani\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/10\/3\/d72abb50803d49dc9c767dcce95ae3f8_18.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Demonstrators gather at a protest during a curfew, two days after the nationwide anti-government protests turned violent, in Baghdad\"><\/div>\n<p>More than 30 people have been killed in the protests engulfing Iraq [Thaier al-Sudani\/Reuters]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Several Iraqis said they received on Thursday text messages from Abdul Mahdi&#8217;s office giving a number for a hotline that protesters could call to air their grievances.<\/p>\n<p>Iraq has the world&#8217;s fourth-largest reserves of oil, according to the IMF, but much of its population of 40 million lives in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/poverty.html\">poverty<\/a> and without decent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/healthcare.html\">healthcare<\/a>, education, or power and water supply.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll keep going until the government falls,&#8221; Ali, an unemployed university graduate, told the AFP news agency on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve got nothing but 250 lira [20 US cents] in my pocket while government officials have millions,&#8221; the 22-year-old added.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to imposing curfews, Iraqi authorities have also cut internet access in the capital and across much of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The measures appear to have done little to stymie the unrest, however.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the<span>\u00a031 killed, more than\u00a0<\/span>1,040 people have been wounded and 62 others arrested, according to the Iraqi\u00a0<span>High Commission for\u00a0<\/span><span>Human Rights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span>More than half of those killed in the last three days have been in the southern city of Nasiriya.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"32\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/10\/3\/23ae819f202148958e0b33f081a045d0_18.jpg\" readability=\"9\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Anti-government protesters help a soldier from the Federal Police Rapid Response Forces to get out of the protest site area after other protesters beat him, in Baghdad, Iraq, Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019.
