It feels like a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/purposely-leaked-20-things-about-samsungs-digital-city\" target=\"_blank\">university campus<\/a>\u00a0with green parks, throngs of young people, social clubs and coffee shops. There\u2019s also a massive cafeteria where everything, from pizza to kimchi, is free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">In other words, it seems like a fun place to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">But Samsung, the world\u2019s largest maker of smartphones, TVs and memory chips, is perpetually in crisis mode. In part, that\u2019s by design: Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee once wrote that a successful company needs to maintain a \u201cheightened sense of crisis,\u201d meaning even in the good times, it must anticipate change ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">That couldn\u2019t be more true, now. Global smartphone sales are declining, pressuring Samsung Electronics\u2019 largest business line. (<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/09\/12\/technology\/samsung-note-7-recall-battery-fires-stock\/\" target=\"_blank\">Exploding phones<\/a>\u00a0in 2016 didn\u2019t help.) An e<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/business\/2019\/08\/02\/japan-south-korea-trade-war-pham-first-move-lok.cnn\" target=\"_blank\">scalating trade war<\/a>\u00a0between South Korea and Japan threatens to raise the company\u2019s costs. And Samsung\u2019s de-facto leader Lee Jae-yong, the chairman\u2019s son, is also facing a retrial on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/29\/tech\/samsung-lee-jae-yong-retrial\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">bribery charges<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Under pressure on multiple fronts, Samsung is eager to find the next big thing beyond smartphones or memory chips to power the company\u2019s future growth. It\u2019s pouring some<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/08\/technology\/samsung-ai-5g-investment\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0$22 billion over three years<\/a>\u00a0into areas like 5G and automotive electronics, led primarily by investments in Samsung Electronics.\u00a0(The conglomerate\u2019s other business lines include shipbuilding, construction and insurance.) Much of that innovation and experimentation is coming out of secretive research and development labs at Digital City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">In\u00a0July,\u00a0CNN was granted rare access to tour those labs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Here\u2019s what we saw.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"cnnix-article__image--xl\">\n\t<a href=\"media\/01-samsung-lab.jpg\" class=\"progressive replace\"><br \/>\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/09\/business\/samsung-headquarters-south-korea\/media\/01-samsung-lab-tiny.jpg\" class=\"preview\" alt=\"All employees and visitors are required to walk through metal detectors on their way in and out of Samsung\u2019s R&#038;D facilities.\"><br \/>\n\t<\/a><figcaption class=\"cnnix-article__image-caption\">\n\t\tAll employees and visitors are required to walk through metal detectors on their way in and out of Samsung\u2019s R&#038;D facilities.<br \/>\n\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"cnnix-article__subheader\">Crisis culture and constant creation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">On my way to Samsung\u2019s top secret R&#038;D labs, I pass through the company\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsunginnovationmuseum.com\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Innovation Museum<\/a>, an area that\u2019s open to the public. It\u2019s not just Samsung products on display: It\u2019s the big names in consumer tech history. I spot a Hoover vacuum cleaner, a classic Sony Trinitron TV and early semiconductors by Intel. It\u2019s a walk through a timeline of human ingenuity, from the discovery of electricity to the first, brick-sized, mobile phone \u2014\u00a0and it\u2019s a symbol of how Samsung sees its rightful place in the unfolding history of invention.<\/p>\n<section class=\"cnnix-article__chart\">\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">But the vibe upon entering Samsung\u2019s R&#038;D labs is completely different. Security systems in every building scan everyone on the way in and out, including employees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Of course, Samsung\u2019s biggest competitors \u2014 companies like Apple, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/2019\/05\/business\/huawei-cnnphotos\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Huawei<\/a>, Google and Amazon \u2014 all have secretive labs, too. But Samsung has a reputation for throwing things against the wall to see if they stick, often at a faster rate than its rivals. That strategy is great when it works \u2014 but it also leads to the occasional flop. One example: Earlier this year, when Samsung rushed its folding phone Galaxy Fold to market, early reviewers complained of defective hinges and broken screens. Samsung pulled the phone, tweaked the design, and has since launched a new version <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/09\/04\/tech\/samsung-galaxy-fold-launch\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">in South Korea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"cnnix-article__image--lg\">\n\t<a href=\"media\/02-samsung-lab.jpg\" class=\"progressive replace\"><br \/>\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/09\/business\/samsung-headquarters-south-korea\/media\/02-samsung-lab-tiny.jpg\" class=\"preview\" alt=\"Engineers monitor network traffic and status at a 5G connectivity lab at Samsung headquarters.\"><br \/>\n\t<\/a><figcaption class=\"cnnix-article__image-caption\">\n\t\tEngineers monitor network traffic and status at a 5G connectivity lab at Samsung headquarters.<br \/>\n\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">For a company built on a crisis culture, that constant cycle of inventing, failing and reiterating is baked into the DNA. \u201cThe key thing about crisis is how you are going to manage the risk, how you are going to handle that business for the future\u201d says Samsung Electronics CEO and President Hyun-Suk Kim. \u201cWe believe that crisis is our opportunity for our future growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">After my ID and the crew\u2019s camera equipment are checked multiple times, we are whisked to a gleaming white garage dedicated to Samsung\u2019s Digital Cockpit project. There, Samsung Vice President Taejung Yeo, who heads the project, and his team of engineers dismantle a car to install a high-tech dashboard.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"cnnix-article__pullquote--xl\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe believe that crisis is our opportunity for our future growth.\u201d<\/blockquote><figcaption>Hyun-Suk Kim,Samsung Electronics CEO and President<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">The Digital Cockpit was first unveiled at the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/video-digital-cockpit-2019-next-level-connected-driving\" target=\"_blank\">2018 Consumer Electronics Show<\/a>, but I\u2019m told I\u2019ll be the first journalist to test version 2.0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Inside the Digital Cockpit, which Samsung says could hit the market as early as 2020,\u00a0six screens stretch from one side of the car to the other, providing a souped-up, digital rehash of\u00a0a\u00a0traditional dashboard. Instead of relying on a giant tablet computer like you\u2019d see in a Tesla, Samsung has chosen to stay with the dashboard experience to offer a streamlined, horizontal interface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">The set of screens features two side-view \u201ce-mirrors\u201d that use augmented reality to highlight moving figures nearby for greater situational awareness. Many cars already have crash avoidance features and touch screens. And some of the biggest names in tech have entered the game, including<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/03\/13\/technology\/mobileye-intel-self-driving-cars\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Intel through its acquisition of vision-safety software firm Mobileye<\/a>, as well as Google parent Alphabet through its <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/12\/13\/technology\/google-waymo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Waymo unit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">But the speed at which Samsung has become a major player in automotive tech is impressive. Four years ago, the company had hardly any footprint in the market. Then, in 2016, it bought <a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/11\/14\/technology\/samsung-harman-autos-connected\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">US-based Harman International Industries for $8 billion<\/a>. Using the Digital Cockpit, I can not only access maps, play music and stream videos for fellow passengers, but also control the temperature of my living room at home and even see what\u2019s inside my kitchen refrigerator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">At the moment, that kinda feels like too much information.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">\u201cWe try to avoid driver distraction,\u201d Yeo says. \u201cThis is deliberately designed to avoid unnecessary distraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">I\u2019m not so sure. Do I need to be this hyper-connected while hitting the highway? No longer in development, he\u2019s now a lifeless mascot for a team of technologists who are working on a new wave of robotic innovation \u2014 robots that we can wear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Young-bo Shim, the head of SAIT\u2019s Mechatronics Lab, and his team have developed a product they call the Gait Enhancing Motivation System or GEMS. \u00a0True to its name, it\u2019s a walking assistant designed to help wearers improve strength and balance. Shim believes it could one day help workers with physically demanding jobs as well as disabled people and senior citizens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">It takes about a minute to strap the system over my trousers and onto my hips. Fortunately, it\u2019s lightweight, at just over 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds). The system is sleek with no extra buttons or dials. A set of oblong white disks containing sensors and motors are positioned on the sides of my hips and at the small of my back. Those sensors measure and predict my gait based on just a few steps. And then, in a very subtle way, the technology lifts my legs with every step. I feel an added assist as if someone is underneath me and guiding me forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">When I sprint across the lab and race up a set of stairs, the feeling of enhanced mobility is even more pronounced. The GEMS system can also be programmed to add resistance and challenge my movements \u2014 a feeling akin to walking forward in a swimming pool in waist-high water.\u00a0\u201cThe most optimal exercise for elderly people is walking. So this system is designed to help people and to reinforce muscle while walking,\u201d says Shim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">For Samsung, health care is not a new field. The larger conglomerate has been in the space since it opened a hospital, the Samsung Medical Center in Korea in 1994. But like a lot of its rivals, Samsung Electronics sees the convergence of medicine and tech as a big industry ripe for disruption. And of course, there are huge revenue possibilities there, too: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abiresearch.com\/market-research\/product\/1032566-exoskeletons-for-industrial-use-cases\/?utm_source=media&#038;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\">nearly $6 billion<\/a>\u00a0in the exoskeleton industry alone over the next decade, analysts say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">GEMS is still in development mode, but the race to market is on. A number of performance-enhancing suits are already on the market from Hyundai, Honda and Sarcos Robotics. Then, they take my blood pressure using their new app and the existing heart rate sensor located on the back of a Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Although heart rate and blood pressure are linked, blood pressure is technically more difficult to measure. After a couple false starts, the blood pressure app on the smartphone nails it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Amid reports that Samsung&#8217;s new Galaxy Watch Active will have ECG heart rate tracking, the team only confirms it is developing an electrocardiogram or ECG heart rate tracker. (They don\u2019t acknowledge whether a smartwatch is involved.) It\u2019s also working on a wearable device to track glucose levels in a non-invasive way \u2014 something that Apple is reportedly also exploring as a new Apple Watch feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Perhaps the biggest innovation in Digital City isn\u2019t actually a product but a place. The C-Lab is the heart of Samsung\u2019s Digital City. It\u2019s a bright, colorful workspace with a mission to cultivate the next big idea.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"cnnix-article__image--lg\">\n\t<a href=\"media\/11-samsung-lab.jpg\" class=\"progressive replace\"><br \/>\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/09\/business\/samsung-headquarters-south-korea\/media\/11-samsung-lab-tiny.jpg\" class=\"preview\" alt=\"Samsung engineers exchange ideas and work on prototypes inside the C-Lab.\"><br \/>\n\t<\/a><figcaption class=\"cnnix-article__image-caption\">\n\t\tSamsung engineers exchange ideas and work on prototypes inside the C-Lab.<br \/>\n\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Samsung says any employee can apply to enter the C-Lab and become an innovation leader regardless of job title and experience. Ideas are submitted through an online ideas platform. Employees with winning applications can then enter the lab to refine a prototype until they are field tested in the real world and are eventually deemed fit for market. A company policy allows employees to spin off successful C-Lab projects into separate, independently-managed companies, which Samsung supports with seed money. Samsung typically retains a minority stake in the spun-off startups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Since the C-Lab opened six years ago, more than 250 successful projects have been developed including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mangoslab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cnemonic\u201d mini printer<\/a>, which prints photos and memos as sticky notes without ink or toner. The company now making the compact smart printer, Mangoslab, spun out of Samsung\u2019s C-Lab and launched as a full-fledged startup in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Hyungmin Joo is a Samsung engineer with Ignis, a C-Lab maker of thermal imaging cameras for firefighters to use hands-free during rescue operations. The cameras can be attached to a mask or the firefighter\u2019s suit. \u00a0\u201cActually, this is not just my idea,\u201d Joo tells me while holding the camera. \u201cIt\u2019s from the feedback from real firefighters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">Using advice from frontline firefighters, the team developed cameras that are compact, easy-to-use and able to withstand water, dust and extreme heat. Everything around me appears as a milky white blob.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">But when I overlay a VR headset paired with a Samsung smartphone and the Rel\u00fam\u012dno\u00a0app, I am immediately able to make out the figures around me. The experience is like seeing the world traced over with a felt-tip marker. For people with visual impairment, it can allow them to pick out outlined objects and people from the rest of the scene. Although it currently uses a Samsung VR headset to block out ambient light and show the enhanced image on its optical lens, Samsung is developing other hardware, including glasses, that will serve the same function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cnnix-article__paragraph\">There are other rivals in this niche market: eSight, NuEyes and IrisVision all provide headset-based technologies to improve sight for the visually impaired.
