{"id":40566,"date":"2019-08-21T18:22:58","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T18:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40566"},"modified":"2019-08-21T18:22:58","modified_gmt":"2019-08-21T18:22:58","slug":"baffled-danes-mock-trump-after-he-scraps-trip-over-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40566","title":{"rendered":"Baffled Danes mock Trump after he scraps trip over Greenland"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"167.864552041\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/donald-trump.html\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s decision to call off a planned visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/Denmark.html\">Denmark<\/a> after its refusal to sell Greenland to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> has been met with condemnation and mockery by politicians and the public in Copenhagen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Speaking to reporters on Wednesday,\u00a0<span>Danish\u00a0Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed surprise and disappointment following Trump&#8217;s move the previous day but\u00a0reiterated that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/greenland.html\">Greenland<\/a>, an autonomous Danish territory,\u00a0was not for sale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;A discussion about a potential sale of Greenland has been put forward. It has been rejected by Greenland premier Kim Kielsen, and I fully stand behind that rejection,&#8221; said\u00a0<span>Frederiksen, who had previously described the idea of any such deal as &#8220;absurd&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The prime minister, however, said the cancellation of the trip &#8220;does not change the character of our good relations and we will of course continue our ongoing dialogue&#8221; with the US, a NATO ally.<\/p>\n<p>Later on Wednesday, Trump told reporters at the White House that Frederiksen&#8217;s refusal to consider negotiations for the world&#8217;s largest island was &#8220;nasty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was not a nice way of doing it. She could have just said no, we&#8217;d rather not do it,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;She&#8217;s not talking to me, she&#8217;s talking to the United States of America.\u00a0They can&#8217;t say: &#8216;How absurd.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Deeply insulting&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>At first, Trump&#8217;s proposal had elicited incredulity and humour from politicians in Denmark, with former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen saying: &#8220;It must be an April Fool&#8217;s Day joke.&#8221;\u00a0But the mood shifted to bewilderment following the US president&#8217;s decision to scrap the September 2-3 visit.<\/p>\n<p>Writing on Twitter,\u00a0<span>former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said the US president&#8217;s comments were &#8220;deeply insulting to the people of Greenland and Denmark&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"6.32692307692\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">So the POTUS has cancelled his visit to Denmark because there was no interest in discussing selling Greenland <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCRadio4?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BBCRadio4<\/a> Is this some sort of joke? It shows, more than ever, why we should consider the EU countries our greatest allies.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rasmus Jarlov, a member of the opposition Conservative Party, said Trump should &#8220;show more respect&#8221;, while simultaneously voicing his disbelief over the plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Are parts of the US for sale?
