{"id":40552,"date":"2019-08-20T18:22:42","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T18:22:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40552"},"modified":"2019-08-20T18:22:42","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T18:22:42","slug":"more-clashes-between-separatists-government-in-yemeni-south","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40552","title":{"rendered":"More clashes between separatists, government in Yemeni south"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"170.029124103\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">UAE-backed separatist fighters have seized a number of military camps in Yemen&#8217;s southern Abyan province, <span>as fresh clashes with forces loyal to the country&#8217;s internationally recognised government\u00a0<\/span>caused multiple deaths and injuries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The two sides are nominal allies in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/08\/uae-urges-dialogue-resolve-yemen-tensions-190812152744538.html\">Saudi-UAE-led military coalition<\/a> battling the Houthi rebels movement after the latter took over the capital, Sanaa, and most major cities in 2014.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">But earlier this month the so-called Security Belt militia, of the pro-secession Southern Transitional Council\u00a0(STC), broke with the government and seized its temporary base of Aden.\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a> said at least 40 people were killed in several days of fighting in Aden,\u00a0<span>which has functioned as the seat of President\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2012\/02\/2012219133034774204.html\">Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi<\/a><span>&#8216;s government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Amid escalating tensions, the Security Belt on Tuesday overran a military camp belonging to the government&#8217;s special forces in Zinjibar, <span>about 60km east of Aden in Abyan province,\u00a0<\/span>and deployed across much of the city, unidentified officials and residents told The Associated Press news agency.\u00a0<span>The clashes killed at least three civilians and wounded nine, AP reported.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span>Separately, Abyan Governor Abu Bakr Hussein told AFP news agency that the separatists had also seized <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>a nearby military camp at Al-Kawd, forcing out the 350 troops there.<\/p>\n<p>At least four military personnel &#8211; two separatists and two government troops &#8211; were killed and 23 wounded in the fighting, Hussein said, adding that 1,100 troops had been stationed in Zinjibar.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Unjustified escalation&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-arab-emirates.html\">United Arab Emirates<\/a>\u00a0(UAE)\u00a0is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/saudi-arabia.html\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>&#8216;s main partner in the military coalition against the Houthis, but it has trained and equipped the separatists.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts say the rising tensions between the separatists and the internationally recognised government\u00a0reflects a wider rift between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh and\u00a0complicates UN peace efforts in war-ravaged Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Yemen&#8217;s Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad al-Hadhrami said the latest flare-up in Abyan would undermine peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What Abyan governorate is witnessing is an unjustified escalation by the STC,&#8221; the Yemeni foreign ministry quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is something that is rejected and unacceptable and will undermine mediation efforts by Saudi Arabia,&#8221; he added, referring to a delegation\u00a0<span>sent by Riyadh to Aden to discuss the new front in the war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Al-Hadhrami<\/span>\u00a0also called for an &#8220;immediate and complete halt of the military and financial support&#8221; by the UAE to the separatists.<\/p>\n<p>Nizar Haitham, STC spokesman, said the council was open to dialogue but ruled out any withdrawal from the military posts in Aden.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There will be no dialogue if we were to hand over all the positions &#8230; what will there be left to negotiate,&#8221; he said in remarks published by the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to the UN\u00a0Security Council before a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/yemen.html\">Yemen<\/a>\u00a0briefing on Tuesday in New York, the STC said it was holding firm to demands for self-rule in the south and to be included in any UN-sponsored talks on Yemen&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For too long the southern voice has been excluded from any negotiation table,&#8221; the STC said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The onus is now on the international community, and in particular the UN Security Council to accept the new realities on the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>South Yemen was a separate state until it merged with the north in 1990. Four years later, an armed secession bid failed to reverse the reunification.<\/p>\n<p>The UN&#8217;s Yemen envoy Martin Griffiths said told the UN Security Council that there is &#8220;no time to lose&#8221; in brokering a peace deal to bring the fighting to a close.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fragmentation of Yemen is becoming a stronger and more pressing threat,&#8221; the British diplomat said via videolink from Jordan on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The stakes are becoming too high for the future of Yemen, the Yemeni people and the wider region. Yemen cannot wait,&#8221; he continued.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No country can tolerate the stresses of internal conflict indefinitely,&#8221; he added, saying the war must be brought to an end &#8220;swiftly and peacefully.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths also said he had held a &#8220;positive and engaging&#8221; meeting with Saudi&#8217;s deputy defence minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, on Monday to discuss the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tireless role under Khalid bin Salman&#8217;s leadership to restore order and stability in south Yemen,&#8221; he tweeted. &#8220;We agreed on the need for continuous dialogue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yemen&#8217;s long-running war has triggered what the UN describes as the world&#8217;s worst humanitarian crisis, with 24.1 million &#8211; more than two-thirds of the population &#8211; in need of aid.
