{"id":40516,"date":"2019-08-17T20:22:33","date_gmt":"2019-08-17T20:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40516"},"modified":"2019-08-17T20:22:33","modified_gmt":"2019-08-17T20:22:33","slug":"kashmirs-key-political-leaders-arrested-by-india-since-august-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40516","title":{"rendered":"Kashmir&#8217;s key political leaders arrested by India since August 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"224.737828177\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir <\/strong>&#8211; Indian authorities have carried out a major crackdown against political leaders in Indian-administered <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/indian-administered-kashmir.html\">Kashmir<\/a> and arrested high-profile figures that include three former chief ministers of the Muslim-majority state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The arrests coincided with the abrogation of decades-old <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/08\/kashmir-special-status-explained-articles-370-35a-190805054643431.html\">Article 370<\/a> of the Indian constitution that protected the demography of Jammu and Kashmir state and provided it a limited autonomy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">It is not clear how many politicians or activists have been arrested since August 5 &#8211; the day Article 370 was abrogated &#8211; since the administration has not come out with any figures.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to scrap Kashmir&#8217;s special status and divide it into two &#8220;union territories&#8221; to be controlled by New Delhi stoked unprecedented tensions in the disputed region and heightened hostilities with <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/pakistan.html\">Pakistan<\/a>, which also claims the disputed Himalayan territory in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a lowdown on prominent Kashmiri politicians and leaders currently under arrest:<\/p>\n<h2>Farooq Abdullah, 83<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/94b92f45ed844ba2b203d4bdde6634c1_18.jpg\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, addresses his supporters during an election rally ahead of the upcoming elections in Srinagar, Indian controlled Kashmir, Monday, April 8, 2019. (AP Photo\/Mukhtar Khan)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/94b92f45ed844ba2b203d4bdde6634c1_18.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Kashmir \"><\/div>\n<p>Farooq Abdullah is president of Kashmir&#8217;s oldest party and member of India&#8217;s parliament [File: AP]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Farooq Abdullah, patriarch of Kashmir&#8217;s powerful Abdullah family which governed the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state for several decades and produced three chief ministers, is under detention at his home in the heavily-guarded Gupkar Road neighbourhood in the main city of Srinagar.<\/p>\n<p>The 83-year-old leader is the president of\u00a0National Conference, Kashmir&#8217;s oldest political party, and is currently a member of India&#8217;s parliament from the prestigious Srinagar seat.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-<a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/india.html\">India<\/a> leader had also been the chief minister of the Muslim-majority state thrice.<\/p>\n<p>In his long political career, Farooq often invoked Article 370, calling it a &#8220;matter of honour&#8221; for the Kashmiris.<\/p>\n<p>Farooq is the son of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who\u00a0<span>led a political movement for two decades for a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir, which would allow its residents to decide whether they want a merger with India or Pakistan, or become an independent state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah\u00a0<span>was arrested by the Indian government in 1953 and later\u00a0<\/span><\/span>settled for a deal with the Indian government in 1975, that saw him becoming the chief minister of the state.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Omar Abdullah, 49<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"32.5\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/b7676f56cee143518ccd98d9a3fe0c7c_18.jpg\" readability=\"10\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Former Jammu and Kashmir state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah speaks during a press conference in Srinagar Indian controlled Kashmir, Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019. (AP Photo\/ Dar Yasin)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/b7676f56cee143518ccd98d9a3fe0c7c_18.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Omar Abdullah\"><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0Omar Abdullah, an articulate politician, has over 3 million Twitter followers [File: Dar Yasin\/AP]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar is the third generation leader of National Conference, the party founded by his grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and currently headed by his father Farooq.<\/p>\n<p>Omar was arrested on August 5, the day Kashmir&#8217;s special status was scrapped, and lodged at Hari Niwas, a state guest house close to the banks of Srinagar&#8217;s iconic Dal Lake.<\/p>\n<p>His arrest caught many by surprise since he was seen as being close to the Indian government.\u00a0<span>He was a junior minister for external affairs in a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition government two decades ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Between 2009-2015, Omar was the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir state in alliance with the Congress party. He reportedly shares a close rapport with top Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One of the most articulate politicians from the region, Omar has more than 3 million followers on Twitter.<\/p>\n<h2>Mehbooba Mufti, 60<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"32\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/1e31d41b05424012b27e94f736e5987c_18.jpg\" readability=\"9\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti waves towards her supporters during a rally to mark 20th raising day of her party in Srinagar, India, Sunday, July 28, 2019. In her initial years in politics, she adopted what was called a &#8220;soft-separatist agenda&#8221; due to her support to the families of Kashmiri rebels tortured and killed by the Indian forces.<\/p>\n<p>Mufti was arrested on August 5, moments after Article 370 was abrogated. She has been lodged at Chashm-e-Shahi, the official guesthouse of the state government.<\/p>\n<p>Her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was India&#8217;s home minister and twice the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Sayeed <a class=\"InternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2016\/01\/indian-administered-kashmir-cm-dies-delhi-160107064607813.html\">died in 2016<\/a> when he was heading a government in alliance with the BJP.<\/p>\n<p>Sayeed was succeeded by Mehbooba as chief minister and president of the People&#8217;s Democratic Party (PDP), which enjoys considerable support in southern Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>Mehbooba had likened the abrogation of Article 370 to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.<\/p>\n<h2>Shah Faesal, 36\u00a0<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/da93c0329b4d4ed1be0d7543c1e0fbd1_18.jpg\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"FILE PHOTO: Shah Faesal, a former Indian bureaucrat from Jammu and Kashmir state, addresses a gathering after launching his political party \" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/da93c0329b4d4ed1be0d7543c1e0fbd1_18.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\" Shah Faesal\"><\/div>\n<p>Ex-bureaucrat Faesal was once described as a &#8216;role model&#8217; for the Kashmiri youth [File: Reuters]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shah Faesal was described as a &#8220;role model&#8221; for the Kashmiri youth when he topped the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>However, he quit the bureaucracy earlier this year citing &#8220;unabated killings in Kashmir&#8221;\u00a0and floated his own\u00a0Jammu Kashmir Political Movement (JKPM) party.<\/p>\n<p>Faesal called his resignation from the IAS an &#8220;act of defiance to remind the Indian government of its responsibilities&#8221; towards Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>The young leader was seen to be emulating Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan&#8217;s signature &#8220;shalwar-kameez&#8221; (traditional dress) which he wore to his political rallies.<\/p>\n<p>On August 14, Faesal was <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/latest\/934050\/jammu-and-kashmir-harvard-university-members-seek-immediate-release-of-shah-faesal-other-leaders\" target=\"_blank\">stopped at New Delhi airport<\/a> when he was reportedly flying to Istanbul and taken to Srinagar, where is under detention. (AP Photo\/Dar Yasin)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/b27860facb5f48f08559e6279234e7fa_18.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"India Kashmir \"><\/div>\n<p>Geelani is one of the most popular leaders in the disputed Kashmir valley [File: Dar Yasin\/AP]<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A former legislator of Jamaat-e-Islami party, Syed Ali Geelani is a veteran Kashmiri separatist and is known for advocating the merger of the region with Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>He is a member of separatist front &#8220;Hurriyat&#8221; or Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), which last year called for shutdown in the Kashmir valley every time India&#8217;s Supreme Court heard petitions seeking revocation of Article 35A, a special law under Article 370 that prevented non-Kashmiris from buying land in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Geelani and his family have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/nia-to-question-syed-ali-shah-geelanis-grandson-on-terror-funding\/article28264144.ece\" target=\"_blank\">investigated<\/a> by India&#8217;s National Investigation Agency (NIA) for alleged funding of &#8220;terrorist activities,&#8221; allegations the veteran leader denies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/nia-may-grill-kashmir-s-separatist-leadership-in-terror-funding-case\/story-Z3h8YRFT9Fg8TcoPS1gn9N.html\" target=\"_blank\">calling<\/a> it a witch-hunt.<\/p>\n<p>Geelani has been detained at his home on the outskirts of Srinagar, where he has remained under detention for the most part of the last nine years because of his sizeable sway in the region.<\/p>\n<p>He is, however, reported to be unwell and has not commented on the recent developments.<\/p>\n<h2>Umar Farooq, 46<\/h2>\n<div class=\"article-embeded-block-image article-embedded-card fullwidth\" readability=\"31\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-mediaCaption\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/8\/17\/931b577ff238488392e3c47bc1508a71_18.jpg\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"article-embeded-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive article-embeded-media-img\" title=\"Top Kashmiri separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq speaks inside the Grand Mosque in Srinagar, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Friday, March 15, 2019. He was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/national-investigation-agency-nia-kashmir-high-court-bar-association-terror-funding-1040131-2017-09-07\" target=\"_blank\">interrogated<\/a>\u00a0by the NIA over alleged &#8220;terror funding&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Qayoom was arrested and reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/other-states\/jammu-and-kashmir-shifts-20-more-potential-troublemakers-from-kashmir-to-agra\/article28954486.ece\" target=\"_blank\">shifted outside Kashmir<\/a> to a jail in the north Indian city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh state.
