{"id":40432,"date":"2019-08-10T21:23:07","date_gmt":"2019-08-10T21:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40432"},"modified":"2019-08-10T21:23:07","modified_gmt":"2019-08-10T21:23:07","slug":"libyas-warring-sides-agree-to-un-backed-temporary-eid-truce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40432","title":{"rendered":"Libya&#8217;s warring sides agree to UN-backed temporary Eid truce"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"112.733333333\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Forces battling for control of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/libya.html\">Libya<\/a>&#8216;s capital, Tripoli, have agreed to a truce on the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid Al-Adha.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The announcement on Saturday came as a car bomb killed three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/un.html\">United Nations<\/a> staff in the eastern city of Benghazi, the\u00a0<span>stronghold for the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The UN is trying to broker a truce in Tripoli, where the LNA in April launched a surprise attack to seize the city from forces loyal to the internationally-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).<\/p>\n<p>The global agency had called on both sides to commit to a humanitarian truce by midnight on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Haftar&#8217;s spokesman Ahmad al-Mesmari announced &#8220;a halt to all military operations&#8230; in the suburbs of Tripoli&#8221;.<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The ceasefire was &#8220;out of respect for this occasion&#8217;s place in our spirits&#8230; so that Libyan citizens can celebrate this Eid in peace&#8221;, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The GNA had said on late Friday it was keen to &#8220;ease the suffering of the citizens and allow rescue workers to accomplish their mission&#8221; and would accept &#8220;a humanitarian truce for Eid al-Adha&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But it listed several conditions, saying the ceasefire must be observed &#8220;in all combat zones, with a cessation of direct and indirect fire and movement of troops&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It also said the truce must include &#8220;a ban on flights and reconnaissance overflights&#8221; across the country&#8217;s entire airspace.<\/p>\n<p>The GNA also called on the UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to &#8220;ensure the implementation of the truce and note any breaches&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In Haftar-controlled Benghazi, a car bombing killed three UN staff &#8211; a Libyan and a Fijian &#8211; as a UN convoy passed through a shopping area, security and medical officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The explosion took place outside Arkan Mall in the Hawari neighbourhood on Saturday, where people were gathering for shopping.<\/p>\n<p>No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n<p><span>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the latest attack in Benghazi, calling &#8220;on all parties to respect the humanitarian truce during Eid al Adha and return to the negotiating table to pursue the peaceful future the people of Libya deserve,&#8221; according to a statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The UN Security Council was due to meet later on Saturday, at the request of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/france.html\">France<\/a>, to discuss the latest developments in Libya.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forces battling for control of Libya&#8217;s capital, Tripoli, have agreed to a truce on the eve of the Muslim festival of Eid Al-Adha.
