{"id":40211,"date":"2019-07-22T16:23:37","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T16:23:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40211"},"modified":"2019-07-22T16:23:37","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T16:23:37","slug":"british-intelligence-fears-gulf-crisis-could-lead-to-attacks-on-uk-by-iranian-terror-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=40211","title":{"rendered":"British intelligence fears Gulf crisis could lead to attacks on UK by Iranian terror cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>British intelligence fears Gulf crisis could lead to attacks on UK by Iranian terror cells<\/h2>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1529296\/middle-east\" readability=\"78.0338983051\">\n<p>\nLONDON: The UK could come under attack from Iranian-backed terror cells if the ongoing Gulf crisis worsens and relations between London and Tehran continue to deteriorate, intelligence sources have said.<\/p>\n<p>\nSenior intelligence officers in the UK now rank the Islamic Republic only behind Russia and China as the severest threat to the national security of the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2019\/07\/21\/iran-backed-terrorist-cells-ready-strike-uk-tension-escalates\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>a Daily Telegraph report<\/strong><\/a> on Monday said.<\/p>\n<p>\nTensions between Britain and Iran have heightened following the seizure of UK-flagged tanker Stena Impero in the Strait of Hormuz last week, raising concerns of top intelligence bodies in Britain.<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to MI5 and MI6, Iran is funding a network of terror cells across the European continent \u2014 including in the UK \u2014 and, depending on how the Gulf crisis plays out, could give the green light for attacks to be carried out.<\/p>\n<p>\nA counter-terror operation in 2015 against a Hezbollah-linked cell found the group had been stockpiling tons of explosives on the outskirts of London, something first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1508761\/world\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>disclosed by the Telegraph in June<\/strong><\/a>, and described as \u201cproper organized terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"image\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"459\" src=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/sites\/default\/files\/%5Byyyy%5D\/%5Bmm%5D\/%5Bdd%5D\/1617586-1952749241.jpg\" width=\"670\"><figcaption>\nA counter-terror operation in 2015 against a Hezbollah-linked cell found the group had been stockpiling tons of explosives. (AFP\/File Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\nA source told the newspaper: \u201cIran has Hezbollah operatives in position to carry out a terrorist attack in the event of a conflict. That is the nature of the domestic threat Iran poses to the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nMI5 and Metropolitan Police said they were confident that the 2015 raids had \u201cseverely disrupted\u201d Iranian terror activity in the UK, but that cells still existed on the European mainland.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe report also disclosed that Iran had been blamed for a series of cyberattacks on the UK, including hacking of politician\u2019s and peers personal information, on the Post Office as well as local government bodies and private sector companies in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe UK government has sent a letter of protest to the UN Security Council over the seizure of the tankers in \u201cOmani waters when it was interrupted by Iranian forces,\u201d which it says is an \u201cillegal interference by Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nThe UK government has consistently said it does not seek confrontation with Iran, but the letter added: \u201cIt is unacceptable and highly escalatory to threaten shipping going about its legitimate business through internationally recognized transit corridors.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British intelligence fears Gulf crisis could lead to attacks on UK by Iranian terror cells LONDON: The UK could come under attack from Iranian-backed terror cells if the ongoing Gulf crisis worsens and relations between London and Tehran continue to deteriorate, intelligence sources have said.
