{"id":39938,"date":"2019-07-01T02:23:25","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T02:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39938"},"modified":"2019-07-01T02:23:25","modified_gmt":"2019-07-01T02:23:25","slug":"ankara-warns-haftar-over-arrests-as-lna-says-hit-turkish-drone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39938","title":{"rendered":"Ankara warns Haftar over arrests as LNA says hit Turkish drone"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"104.907216495\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Flights have resumed at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/libya.html\">Libyan<\/a>\u00a0capital&#8217;s only functioning civilian airport after it was hit by forces loyal to renegade General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/khalifa-haftar.html\">Khalifa<\/a><span class=\"highlight\" data-qa-component=\"highlight-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/khalifa-haftar.html\">\u00a0Haftar<\/a><\/span>, amid rising tensions between the eastern-based commander and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Haftar&#8217;s self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), which has been waging an armed campaign to seize Tripoli from the United Nations-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA), said on Sunday its air force destroyed a Turkish drone parked at Mitiga airport.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;Our fighter [jets] targeted and destroyed a Turkish Bayraktar aircraft as it was taking off,&#8221; the LNA said in a statement on Facebook. &#8220;The aircraft had been prepared to target our armed forces&#8217; positions,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Sunday, Turkey&#8217;s foreign ministry\u00a0accused Haftar&#8217;s forces of arresting six of its citizens, and warned that the LNA would become a &#8220;legitimate target&#8221; if the Turks were not released immediately.<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the LNA said it had\u00a0<span>arrested two Turks in the northeastern oil town of Ajdabiya.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"6053569784001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video Fullwidth\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>Gharyan: Libya&#8217;s UN-recognised forces retake strategic Haftar base<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Ankara has supplied drones and trucks to forces allied to the GNA, while Haftar&#8217;s GNA has received backing from the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, according to diplomats.\u00a0Turkey says it is in Libya to support &#8220;regional peace and stability&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Gharyan loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The LNA launched an offensive on April 4 to capture the capital but it has been pushed back by the Tripoli government&#8217;s forces.<\/p>\n<p>Pro-GNA fighters this week retook the strategic town of Gharyan, in a surprise attack and a major setback for Haftar.<\/p>\n<p>Following the loss of Gharyan during a GNA operation he accused Ankara of backing, Haftar ordered his forces to target Turkish companies, ban flights and arrest Turkish nationals in Libya, his spokesman said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Ankara has warned that it is ready to retaliate against attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Haftar&#8217;s Tripoli offensive has upended UN-led plans to stabilise Libya after years of conflict that have left the oil-producing country divided and caused living standards to plummet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Flights have resumed at the\u00a0Libyan\u00a0capital&#8217;s only functioning civilian airport after it was hit by forces loyal to renegade General Khalifa\u00a0Haftar, amid rising tensions between the eastern-based commander and Turkey.
