{"id":39836,"date":"2019-06-23T05:22:14","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T05:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39836"},"modified":"2019-06-23T05:22:14","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T05:22:14","slug":"extinct-creatures-found-alive-in-lost-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39836","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Extinct&#8217; creatures found alive in &#8216;Lost City&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"165.569496269\">\n<p><cite class=\"Paragraph__cite\">(CNN) \u2014 <\/cite><span>Deep in the lush greenery of the Mosquitia rainforest in Honduras, bordered by steep ridges, lies an archeological site home to ancient ruins and an apparently thriving ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There&#8217;s long been a rumor of a pre-Columbian settlement in this region, sometimes known as the &#8220;Lost City of the Monkey God&#8221; or &#8220;La Ciudad Blanca.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Aviator Charles Lindbergh said he saw it from the sky when he was flying over the region in the 1920s &#8212; and many explorers have tried and failed to track down the legendary spot in Central America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now a team of scientists, led by Conservation International&#8217;s Rapid Assessment Program (RAP) in coordination with the Government of Honduras, have discovered this site is home to rare species.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Creatures uncovered include a tiger beetle, previously only ever recorded in Nicaragua and believed to be extinct. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The government of Honduras wanted to know what wildlife was living in this undisturbed region and commissioned this extensive survey of the area&#8217;s biodiversity, with incredible results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Overall, the team recorded 246 species of butterflies and moths, 30 bats, 57 amphibians and reptiles, alongside many plants, fishes, mammals and insects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Many of these are rare and endangered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<h3>Beautiful spot<\/h3>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__component\" readability=\"9\">\n<a aria-current=\"false\" href=\"http:\/\/rss.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/extinct-creatures-lost-city-honduras\/index.html?gallery=16\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__cta\">\n<div class=\"Image__component CaptionedImage__image Image__hasAspectRatio\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fill,g_auto,h_28,ar_16:9\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190619173231-extinct-creatures-honduras-5.jpg\" alt=\"Extinct Creatures Honduras (5)\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The team had to be helicoptered into this remote rainforest area.<\/p>\n<p>Courtesy Conservation International<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>But first, the team had to get to this secluded spot. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\"><span>&#8220;It&#8217;s so exciting to get to visit places where literally there&#8217;s so few ways to get there,&#8221; Trond Larsen, director of Conservation International&#8217;s rapid assessment program, tells <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/travel\" target=\"_blank\">CNN Travel.<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span>&#8220;There&#8217;s no roads, there&#8217;s no logistical infrastructure to access, so you have to helicopter in. And when you do that, you end up visiting places where wildlife tends to be much more abundant.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__component\" readability=\"9\">\n<a aria-current=\"false\" href=\"http:\/\/rss.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/extinct-creatures-lost-city-honduras\/index.html?gallery=19\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__cta\">\n<div class=\"Image__component CaptionedImage__image Image__hasAspectRatio\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fill,g_auto,h_28,ar_16:9\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190619173349-extinct-creatures-honduras-9.jpg\" alt=\"Extinct Creatures Honduras (9)\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The venomous eyelash viper. <\/p>\n<p>Courtesy Conservation International<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Larsen says the animals and creatures that live in the area aren&#8217;t used to human interaction, which allowed for some incredible moments of interaction and education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Large groups of monkeys, for example, hang out and try to figure out what you are and what&#8217;s going on, there&#8217;s an opportunity to see tremendous amounts of wildlife,&#8221; he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The explorer also highlights the beauty and serenity of the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;There&#8217;s big, old-growth trees that you often just don&#8217;t see in places that are more impacted by people.
