My father was shouting, I will never forget it. I said to my mum: \u2018Mum, what is happening?\u2019 I saw she was very calm and she touched him and he went back to sleep.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>\u201cI remember this day because I took a decision to realize how from this hell came such an optimistic and happy guy. I am telling you that I will never forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>In 1941, Grant\u2019s father fled Nazi-occupied Poland at the age of 13 along with the rest of his family before being exiled in northern Russia, where temperatures plunged to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Only Meir and his brother survived.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>\u201cMy father buried his parents and sister with his bare hands \u2026 he had to dig the grave himself,\u201d Grant said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>\u201cHe was 13. This was all because of hatred. That\u2019s why I am always here to speak about it. Always.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p>Grant is not only committed to telling his father\u2019s story, but also to educating the next generation. That\u2019s why he has embraced a campaign led by Chelsea, the club he once managed, aimed at eradicating anti-Semitism from soccer and society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>\u201cWhen you get to my age, you realize there will be nobody left to tell the younger generation firsthand what happened. That\u2019s why it is so important because we are coming to the end of the Holocaust survivor era.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>Grant\u2019s reservations appear well placed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"27.1428571429\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/interactive\/2018\/11\/europe\/antisemitism-poll-2018-intl\/\">results of CNN\u2019s 2018 investigation into anti-Semitism in Europe<\/a> unearthed a number of shocking statistics on the subject of Holocaust education, with a third of Europeans in the poll saying they knew just a little or nothing at all about the Nazis systematic killing of six million Jews.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>The outlook was similarly bleak in the US.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <picture class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source data- media=\"--device\"><\/source><source data- media=\"--laptop\"><\/source><source data-><\/source><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/06\/sport\/antisemitism-soccer-chelsea-spt-intl\/media\/images\/chelsea-2-lg.jpg\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <\/picture><figcaption>Avram Grant talks to a group of youngsters about his family\u2019s experiences during the Holocaust. (Photo: Chelsea)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34.1712538226\">\n<p>A survey carried out on behalf of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claimscon.org\/study\/\">Claims Conference in 2018<\/a> found that 11% of American adults were not sure they\u2019d ever heard of the Holocaust, rising to one in five millennials. Nearly half of the millennials surveyed could not name a single concentration camp, and 45% of the American adults questioned failed to do so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32.5333333333\">\n<p>In early May, Grant led a delegation from Chelsea and MLS team New England Revolution to take part in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchoftheliving.org.uk\/\">\u201cMarch of the Living,\u201d<\/a> in which participants were taken on a guided tour of Auschwitz and learned about the systematic mass murder of Europe\u2019s Jewish communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>The visit was part of Chelsea\u2019s highly respected \u201cSay No to Anti-Semitism\u201d campaign, which was launched in January 2018 under the leadership of club owner Roman Abramovich.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>It was in November 2017 that Abramovich, who is Jewish, began discussions with the club\u2019s board about a concerted campaign to fight anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>He was perturbed by the number of anti-Semitic incidents that had taken place across Europe and was eager to take a stand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>It was also an opportunity to educate the club\u2019s supporters on a subject that those who watched the team in the 1970s and 1980s would have been all too aware of, given the anti-Semitic songs and chants that used to be heard at games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34.1617021277\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ivorbaddiel\">Ivor Baddiel<\/a>, a Jewish Chelsea supporter, said he stopped attending games temporarily in the 1970s after hearing chants of \u201cSieg Heil\u201d from a section of fellow supporters and seeing anti-Semitic literature sold outside the stadium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>Particularly vivid are his memories from games against Tottenham, one of Chelsea\u2019s London rivals, that historically has a large following from the Jewish community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>Baddiel says Tottenham fans were often targeted by anti-Semitic abuse with songs such as \u201cSpurs are on their way to Auschwitz\u201d and hissing noises mimicking the sound of the gas chambers used by the Nazis during the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <picture class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source data- media=\"--device\"><\/source><source data- media=\"--laptop\"><\/source><source data-><\/source><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/06\/sport\/antisemitism-soccer-chelsea-spt-intl\/media\/images\/chelsea-3-lg.jpg\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <\/picture><figcaption>Tottenham fans at the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid. At the time, the word was also being used by Tottenham supporters, who wanted to reclaim the word from the racists, and instead, in their view, wear it as a badge of honor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"24.8943661972\">\n<p>Even today, some Tottenham supporters refer to themselves as \u2018\u201cYiddos\u201d and the \u201cYid Army,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2019\/jan\/04\/world-jewish-congress-condemns-tottenham-fans-use-of-yids-nickname\">despite calls from Jewish groups to stop.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>Though shocked by the nature of the anti-Semitic abuse, Baddiel, later resumed attending games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>He has made two videos on anti-Semitism, one focusing specifically on the \u201cY-word\u201d and the other for Chelsea\u2019s current campaign, both of which he hopes will help educate the public.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"38\">\n<p>\u201cAbsurd as it sounds, those guys in the pub who are singing, \u2018Spurs are on their way to Auschwitz,\u2019 I think you could even question whether they realize they are being anti-Semitic,\u201d Baddiel said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>\u201cThey think they\u2019re being anti-Tottenham.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>\u201cI think a lot of people didn\u2019t know it was a racist word for Jews and just thought it was about Tottenham fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>Today, Chelsea is one of the most proactive sporting organizations in tackling anti-Semitism, and its \u201cSay No to Anti-Semitism\u201d campaign has already won praise from both inside and outside football.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <picture class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source data- media=\"--device\"><\/source><source data- media=\"--laptop\"><\/source><source data-><\/source><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/06\/sport\/antisemitism-soccer-chelsea-spt-intl\/media\/images\/chelsea-4-lg.jpg\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <\/picture><figcaption>A delegation from Chelsea visits Auschwitz-Birkenau. (Photo: Chelsea FC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>The club has taken supporters to Auschwitz-Birkenau to educate them about the horrors of the Holocaust, has invited survivors to speak to players and staff about their experiences, and is raising money to help fund a new Holocaust exhibition at London\u2019s Imperial War Museum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>Neil Beard, a Chelsea supporter who attended his first game in 1970, believes the club has helped fans become better equipped to fight against anti-Semitism by providing educational programs and taking them on trips to concentration camps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p>Beard, who visited Auschwitz last year with his two teenage children, and also attended a talk by a Holocaust survivor organized by the club in London, says the work Chelsea is doing is having a hugely positive effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>\u201cI feel we came back as advocates ready to tackle anti-Semitism, particularly where it\u2019s done casually and through ignorance and people think it\u2019s funny,\u201d Beard told CNN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not funny. We really need to take it seriously. It\u2019s obviously a global issue with the rise of fascism but as Chelsea supporters and for the club I think we\u2019ve come  a long way because it\u2019s now unacceptable and embarrassing among Chelsea supporters to sing some of the songs that were sung during the 1980s, 1990s and even up to today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>\u201cListening to a survivor had a huge impact on me, trying to imagine yourself in that position and that was harrowing to think you could have found yourself there in that kind of hell. (Photo: Chelsea FC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33.0188679245\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chelseafc.com\/en\/foundation\">Chelsea Foundation<\/a> runs equality training workshops in 75 schools across the UK and ran sessions for hundreds of children in the lead-up to the team\u2019s arrival in Boston for the club\u2019s game against New England Revolution in a contest arranged to raise money for groups tackling anti-Semitism and discrimination.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p>Bruce Buck, Chelsea\u2019s chairman, insists that while instances of anti-Semitism at the club\u2019s games remain a \u201cvery small problem but an important problem\u201d compared to 30 years ago, there will be no letup in the fight against Jew hatred.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>He cites the training of stewards in identifying anti-Semitic behavior and the use of CCTV as key aides in tracking down those responsible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"36\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve come a long way, society has come a long way, but there\u2019s still a problem and I don\u2019t underestimate the problem,\u201d Buck told CNN.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p>\u201cWe are only dealing with the overt incidents and not dealing with those behind the screen and that\u2019s where the other aspect I think of our project, the education part, dealing with that, trying to deal with what\u2019s below the surface.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"25.6476683938\">\n<p>Chelsea has cracked down on instances of racism by its fans already this season. Four fans were suspended for appearing to racially abuse Manchester City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2018\/12\/10\/football\/raheem-sterling-stan-collymore-racism-football-spt-intl\/index.html\">Raheem Sterling last December,<\/a> while <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-soccer-europa-slp-che\/chelsea-fans-denied-entry-to-prague-match-over-alleged-racist-chant-idUKKCN1RN2T8\">three supporters were barred<\/a> from entering a Europa League game against Slavia Prague after a video on social media allegedly showed them <a href=\"https:\/\/cnn.com\/2019\/04\/12\/football\/mohamed-salah-chelsea-fans-racism-spt-inlt\/index.html\">abusing Liverpool\u2019s Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"43\">\n<p>\u201cWe all understand the power of football, the reach of football, it\u2019s extraordinary,\u201d Buck added. \u201cAs an American, we think of ourselves as the biggest sports fans in the world and maybe we are, but we don\u2019t have the attachment to our club that you do in the UK which is cradle to grave, whichever club your father supports, you support, and it\u2019s unique. I think it\u2019s true in continental Europe too. So that attachment gives them a loyalty and gives us an opportunity to education.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>Chelsea\u2019s work has already been commended by sections of the local Jewish Community as well as UK Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"cp-image ivanim-fade\">\n<figure class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <picture class=\"u-full-width\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;><![endif]--><source data- media=\"--device\"><\/source><source data- media=\"--laptop\"><\/source><source data-><\/source><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><br \/>\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/interactive\/2019\/06\/sport\/antisemitism-soccer-chelsea-spt-intl\/media\/images\/chelsea-6-lg.jpg\" class=\"lazyload u-full-width u-height-auto \" alt=\"\/\">\n        \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  <\/picture><figcaption>Chelsea\u2019s players visit the Holocaust memorial in the US city of Boston. (Photo: Chelsea FC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"37\">\n<p>Mirvis believes the role of education, which Chelsea is keen to emphasize as part of its strategy,  is key to tackling anti-Semitism though he concedes there is no quick fix. \u201cIt could take an entire generation to correct properly,\u201d he told CNN of the fight against anti-Semitism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>\u201cChelsea is leading the field here and it\u2019s huge congratulations to them. I think the most significant thing Chelsea has done is to acknowledge that there is a problem. That\u2019s very much to their credit. They have taken some concrete and constructive steps.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"38\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an enormous challenge. I think education, the concept, needs to be repeated again and again, together with genuine attempts. Our problem is that we are playing catch up when we are dealing with adults who are already in the stadium. They\u2019ve been conditioned to some degree by their society to think in a certain way and find certain elements of conduct within their comfort zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"pullquote ivanim-fade container\" readability=\"6.5\">\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p>\u201cWhen you are talking about changing opinions you need thought leaders, you need influencers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32.2471042471\">\n<p>Karen Pollock, head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.het.org.uk\/\">Holocaust Educational Trust<\/a> in London, told CNN it had been \u201chumbling\u201d to see Chelsea committing itself to fighting anti-Semitism with direction coming from the very top of the club and being embraced by staff and players alike.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"34\">\n<p>\u201cFootballers are role models for so many and their words and actions have such an impact,\u201d Pollock said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"32\">\n<p>\u201cTheir positive message of inclusion and tolerance is vital in tackling prejudice and hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>For Chelsea, its arrival in the US could scarcely have been more timely.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"26.8820224719\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adl.org\/audit2018#themes-and-trends\">An annual report published in May<\/a> by the Anti-Defamation League found that anti-Semitic incidents in the US remained near historic levels in 2018 after surging the previous year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>According to the latest figures from the ADL, 2018 was the third-highest year on record for assault, harassment and vandalism against Jews since it began tracking such incidents in 1979.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"38\">\n<p>There were a total of 1,879 attacks against Jews and Jewish institutions across the country, according to the report. Both Abramovich and Revolution owner Robert Kraft had already expressed their desire to work with one another on tackling anti-Semitism, but according to Buck, Pittsburgh was the catalyst for the charity match.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cp-text container\" readability=\"35\">\n<p>Both Abramovich and Kraft pledged to donate $1 million to the charity fund, with a further $2 million being raised through gate receipts.
