{"id":39701,"date":"2019-06-11T12:23:22","date_gmt":"2019-06-11T12:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39701"},"modified":"2019-06-11T12:23:22","modified_gmt":"2019-06-11T12:23:22","slug":"lebanese-businessman-nizar-zakka-leaves-iran-for-beirut-after-his-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39701","title":{"rendered":"Lebanese businessman Nizar Zakka leaves Iran for Beirut after his release"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1509246\/middle-east\" readability=\"83\">\n<p>\nTEHRAN: Lebanese businessman Nizar Zakka left Iran, where he was detained since 2015, and flew to Beirut with Lebanon\u2019s security chief on Tuesday, a Lebanese official told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\nLebanon\u2019s head of general security Abbas Ibrahim told Reuters on Monday that the detainee, who has US residency, would be freed by Iran and that the two would return to Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>\nIran\u2019s judiciary has earlier approved the conditional release of Zakka, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2016 on charges of spying for Washington, its news agency reported Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThe relevant court has agreed to Nizar Zakka\u2019s conditional release and he will be handed over to Lebanese authorities,\u201d Mizan Online quoted judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cAccording to the law, those who are sentenced to up to 10 years in jail, if they have served at least one third of their sentence and shown good behavior\u201d can be released conditionally.<\/p>\n<p>\nAccording to Esmaili, Lebanese President Michel Aoun requested Zakka\u2019s release \u201cin writing\u201d and Iran\u2019s Lebanese ally Hezbollah said it would be \u201cexpedient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThis is an absolutely judicial procedure and no political issue has been involved,\u201d Esmaili was quoted by Tasnim news agency as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\nA resident of the United States in his 50s, Zakka was arrested in September 2015 during a visit to Iran, where he was convicted the following July.<\/p>\n<p>\nAt the time of his arrest, Iranian state television said he was accused of \u201cdeep ties to the military and intelligence services of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nIt broadcast photographs of a man in military uniform it said was of Zakka at a US base.<\/p>\n<p>\nAt the end of 2017, Iranian appeal courts upheld his 10-year jail sentence, as well as those of an American and two Iranian-Americans accused of \u201ccollaboration\u201d with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\nIran and the United States broke diplomatic ties in 1980, in the aftermath of the Islamic revolution.
