{"id":39512,"date":"2019-05-26T14:23:53","date_gmt":"2019-05-26T14:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39512"},"modified":"2019-05-26T14:23:53","modified_gmt":"2019-05-26T14:23:53","slug":"egypt-unfreezes-assets-of-mubarak-era-interior-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39512","title":{"rendered":"Egypt unfreezes assets of Mubarak-era interior minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1502291\/middle-east\" readability=\"64\">\n<p>\nCAIRO: Egypt has unfrozen the assets of its Mubarak-era interior minister, who was acquitted on all corruption-related charges earlier this month, a judicial source confirmed Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Illicit Gains Authority decided last Thursday to lift freezes on Habib Al-Adly\u2019s assets and those of aides who were key players in the graft that dominated Egypt under long-time autocrat Hosni Mubarak.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cHe is free to walk, with no cases or charges against him at the moment,\u201d the judicial source told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\nAdly\u2019s behemoth security apparatus was accused of systematic torture and repression of dissent, helping fuel the 2011 uprising that toppled Mubarak.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn May, a court fined the former minister about $29 on charges of abusing public funds.<\/p>\n<p>\nAdly was sentenced in April 2017 to seven years in prison along with 10 other former officials, for embezzling about $122 million.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut his case was thrown out, with the court citing procedural errors, and a retrial was ordered last year.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn 2014, Adly was acquitted of charges of responsibility for the deaths of protesters during the 2011 uprising.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CAIRO: Egypt has unfrozen the assets of its Mubarak-era interior minister, who was acquitted on all corruption-related charges earlier this month, a judicial source confirmed Sunday.
