{"id":39434,"date":"2019-05-20T17:23:57","date_gmt":"2019-05-20T17:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39434"},"modified":"2019-05-20T17:23:57","modified_gmt":"2019-05-20T17:23:57","slug":"dr-congo-president-tshisekedi-names-new-prime-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39434","title":{"rendered":"DR Congo: President Tshisekedi names new prime minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"95.9487179487\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/felix-tshisekedi-dr-congo-president-elect-190110071344178.html\">Felix <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/felix-tshisekedi-dr-congo-president-elect-190110071344178.html\">Tshisekedi<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/01\/felix-tshisekedi-dr-congo-president-elect-190110071344178.html\"><\/a>\u00a0has named\u00a0Sylvestre Ilunga\u00a0Ilukamba as the\u00a0<span>new prime minister of the<\/span> Democratic Republic of the Congo (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/democratic-republic-congo.html\">DRC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The move was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Presidence_RDC\/status\/1130490075811332096\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> on Monday by presidential spokesman <span>Kasongo Mwema Yambayamba, who said\u00a0<\/span>Ilukamba was appointed under a political agreement between Tshisekedi and his predecessor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/joseph-kabila.html\">Joseph Kabila<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Ilukamba<\/span>\u00a0was previously the head of the DRC&#8217;s national railway company.<\/p>\n<p>He also served as finance minister under former President Mobutu Sese Seko,\u00a0<span>who for more than three decades headed a corrupt and dysfunctional administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>His appointment comes almost five months after\u00a0Tshisekedi<span>\u00a0was declared the winner of a December 30 election which observers said was marred by irregularities and opponents denounced as rigged.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tshisekedi-Kabila coalition<\/h2>\n<p><span>Tshisekedi beat Kabila&#8217;s hand-picked candidate Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary and rival opposition candidate Martin Fayulu, among others, in the presidential ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Fayulu came in a close second but rejected the result and accused Tshisekedi of making a secret deal with Kabila to deprive him of victory.\u00a0<span>Tshisekedi and Kabila denied that there was a deal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kabila&#8217;s Common Front for Congo coalition dominated concurrent legislative elections, winning 342 of the 485 seats in the DRC&#8217;s parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In March, the pair issued a joint statement confirming &#8220;their common will to govern together as part of a coalition government&#8221;.
