President\u00a0Felix <\/a>Tshisekedi<\/a><\/a>\u00a0has named\u00a0Sylvestre Ilunga\u00a0Ilukamba as the\u00a0new prime minister of the<\/span> Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The move was announced<\/a> on Monday by presidential spokesman Kasongo Mwema Yambayamba, who said\u00a0<\/span>Ilukamba was appointed under a political agreement between Tshisekedi and his predecessor, Joseph Kabila<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ilukamba<\/span>\u00a0was previously the head of the DRC’s national railway company.<\/p>\n

He also served as finance minister under former President Mobutu Sese Seko,\u00a0who for more than three decades headed a corrupt and dysfunctional administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

His appointment comes almost five months after\u00a0Tshisekedi\u00a0was declared the winner of a December 30 election which observers said was marred by irregularities and opponents denounced as rigged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tshisekedi-Kabila coalition<\/h2>\n

Tshisekedi beat Kabila’s hand-picked candidate Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary and rival opposition candidate Martin Fayulu, among others, in the presidential ballot.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fayulu came in a close second but rejected the result and accused Tshisekedi of making a secret deal with Kabila to deprive him of victory.\u00a0Tshisekedi and Kabila denied that there was a deal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kabila’s Common Front for Congo coalition dominated concurrent legislative elections, winning 342 of the 485 seats in the DRC’s parliament.<\/span><\/p>\n

In March, the pair issued a joint statement confirming “their common will to govern together as part of a coalition government”. The DRC’s constitution dictates that the prime minister must come from the majority bloc in parliament, while the president traditionally makes the final decision on who will fill the post.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kabila\u00a0governed\u00a0the largely impoverished but mineral-rich Central African country for 18 years before leaving office.<\/p>\n

His final two years in charge saw him stay beyond the\u00a0maximum term limit permitted by the DRC’s constitution and instead oversee a crackdown on protesters calling for him to quit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
