{"id":39398,"date":"2019-05-17T18:23:20","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T18:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39398"},"modified":"2019-05-17T18:23:20","modified_gmt":"2019-05-17T18:23:20","slug":"india-pm-modi-slams-bjp-candidates-gandhi-assassin-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39398","title":{"rendered":"India: PM Modi slams BJP candidate&#8217;s Gandhi assassin comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"148.683651805\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned a firebrand Hindu election candidate from his ruling\u00a0Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)\u00a0<span>who called the assassin of independence icon Mahatma Gandhi a &#8220;patriot&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Modi was forced to act on Friday after a backlash grew over the comments 24 hours earlier by\u00a0<span>Pragya Singh Thakur, who separately faces charges in connection with a 2008 mosque bombing that killed six people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Thakur issued an apology for her statement that Gandhi&#8217;s assassin Nathuram Godse &#8220;was, is, and will remain a patriot&#8221;, but it failed to douse the controversy,\u00a0and the Hindu nationalist BJP said it had launched an inquiry into the incident.<\/p>\n<p><span>Gandhi was shot three times in January 1948 by Godse, a Hindu fanatic angered by what he considered to be Gandhi&#8217;s pandering to Muslims and by India&#8217;s partition after independence from Britain in 1947.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Modi <a href=\"https:\/\/news24online.com\/news\/utterly-disgusting-will-never-forgive-sadhvi-pragya-my-lifetime-insulting-bapu-angry-modi-news24-fbc101a4\" target=\"_blank\">told<\/a> India&#8217;s News 24 channel that Thakur&#8217;s &#8220;language and thoughts should be condemned and are unacceptable in a civilised society&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;I won&#8217;t forgive her&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;People with such beliefs must think one hundred times before saying such things &#8230; She apologised publicly for the comments, but I won&#8217;t forgive her at a personal level,&#8221; Modi added.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s main opposition Congress party, which Gandhi once led, said Modi&#8217;s words &#8220;mean nothing&#8221; and called on the 68-year-old to take &#8220;real action&#8221; over\u00a0<span>Thakur<span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div data-embed-type=\"Brightcove\" data-embed-id=\"6038107132001\">\n<table class=\"in-article-item video\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"3\">\n<td readability=\"5\">\n<p>India votes: Campaigning ends before final phase of votes 2:44<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Remove terror accused Pragya Thakur from your party. Her statements have not only brought disgrace but also hurt the sentiments of people in India &#038; across the world,&#8221; Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/INCMaharashtra\/photos\/a.382775991848679\/2096594093800185\/?type=3\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a statement posted on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>The BJP last month named Thakur as its parliamentary candidate in the state capital of India&#8217;s central Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, prompting criticism from opponents who accused the party of using her candidacy in a bid to polarise voters along religious lines.<\/p>\n<p>The 49-year-old candidate, commonly known as\u00a0<span>Sadhvi Pragya, has since emerged as a symbol of a Hindu nationalist movement showing\u00a0<\/span>increasing intolerance towards Muslims in Hindu-majority India.<\/p>\n<p>Thakur&#8217;s run for office has been overshadowed, however, by an ongoing trial over her\u00a0<span>suspected involvement in a bomb blast near a mosque in\u00a0<\/span><span>Melegaon, Maharashtra state, in 2008 that killed six people and injured 100.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She has denied having had any role in the 2008 explosion near several mosques in the Muslim-majority town. But, according to court filings cited by Reuters news agency, the motorcycle on which the explosives were strapped was Thakur&#8217;s, and she was among those who planned the attack to avenge so-called &#8220;jihadi activities&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The trial started in December but a final verdict is not expected anytime soon.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;This government should continue&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>This week&#8217;s controversy erupted ahead of Sunday&#8217;s final round of India&#8217;s marathon election. Polls predict Modi will be re-elected but with a reduced majority after scooping 282 seats of the 543 at stake in the Lok Sahba, India&#8217;s lower house of Parliament, in 2014.<\/p>\n<p><span>At the national level, Modi&#8217;s primary rival is Congress party President Rahul Gandhi, the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty that has produced three prime ministers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Friday, the notoriously media-shy Modi left journalists\u00a0disappointed as he declined to answer questions at what Indian reporters had dubbed his first-ever press conference as prime minister.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The people have decided that this government should continue.
