Human rights must be respected even when fighting terrorism, he told Chinese authorities during a visit to last week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/26\/asia\/belt-and-road-summit-beijing-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">billion-dollar Belt and Road Forum<\/a> in Beijing, according to a UN spokesman.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">China has cracked down on its population of Muslim Uyghurs, who are concentrated in the country&#8217;s far western Xinjiang region. Last year, a US State Department official estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/120418_Busby_Testimony.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">at least 800,000<\/a> and possibly up to two million people may have been detained in huge &#8220;re-education centers.&#8221; In February, Turkey&#8217;s Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/10\/asia\/turkey-china-uyghur-xinjiang-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> the people detained in the camps were subject to &#8220;torture and political brainwashing&#8221; and called the camps a &#8220;great shame for humanity.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph speakable\">China has defended its use of what it calls vocational training centers, saying they are a necessary counterterror measure.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(CNN)United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has reminded China that its treatment of Uyghurs is still under close watch.
