{"id":39049,"date":"2019-04-19T06:23:49","date_gmt":"2019-04-19T06:23:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39049"},"modified":"2019-04-19T06:23:49","modified_gmt":"2019-04-19T06:23:49","slug":"trade-north-korea-on-agenda-for-trump-abe-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=39049","title":{"rendered":"Trade, North Korea on agenda for Trump-Abe talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"119.364675985\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/donald-trump.html\">Donald Trump<\/a> will travel to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/japan.html\">Japan<\/a> in May\u00a0for meetings with Japanese Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/shinzo-abe.html\">Shinzo Abe<\/a>\u00a0that are expected to include discussions on\u00a0<span>North Korea and &#8220;efforts to achieve final, fully verified denuclearisation&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Trump&#8217;s visit will follow a scheduled tour of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/united-states.html\">United States<\/a> by Abe in April where, in addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/north-korea.html\">North Korea<\/a>, the two leaders are likely to discuss bilateral\u00a0<span>trade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Trump will visit Japan from May 25 to 28, the White House said in a statement on Thursday, adding that &#8220;the two leaders will also explore ways to advance their shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region, including steps that will strengthen our bilateral trade and investment relationship&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In Tokyo, Trump plans to meet Crown Prince Naruhito, who will become emperor on May 1, a day after the abdication of his father, Emperor Akihito.<\/p>\n<p>Abe is one of Trump&#8217;s closest allies on the world stage and Japan was the first stop on Trump&#8217;s November 2017 Asia tour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span>Japan-US trade<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Trump has touted his good relationship with Abe, which has seen closer security ties given shared concerns about China&#8217;s growing power, but he has also made clear he was unhappy with Japan&#8217;s trade surplus with the US, which was $67.6bn in goods in 2018, according to US figures.<\/p>\n<p>This week, US and Japanese officials held a first round of talks towards a new trade deal Trump has sought and the US side raised concerns over the &#8220;very large&#8221; trade deficit with Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>Last September, Trump and Abe agreed to start trade talks in an arrangement that protects Japanese carmakers from further tariffs while negotiations are under way.<\/p>\n<p>Abe has also insisted on holding his own summit with the North Korean leader to settle the two neighbours&#8217; long-standing differences.<\/p>\n<p>Denuclearisation and the abduction of Japanese citizens by North Korea decades ago to train spies have been the major obstacles in normalising relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, North Korea admitted it kidnapped 13 Japanese in the 1970s and 1980s, five of whom had returned home.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will aim at diplomatic normalisation by settling the unfortunate past,&#8221; Abe said earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From now on, I want to do our best to collaborate with the US, South Korea and also China and Russia to aim for a solution on North Korean matters, including abduction, nuclear weapons and missiles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US President Donald Trump will travel to Japan in May\u00a0for meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe\u00a0that are expected to include discussions on\u00a0North Korea and &#8220;efforts to achieve final, fully verified denuclearisation&#8221;.
