{"id":38955,"date":"2019-04-11T10:22:58","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T10:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38955"},"modified":"2019-04-11T10:22:58","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T10:22:58","slug":"omar-al-bashir-steps-down-transitional-government-announced-al-arabiya-tv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38955","title":{"rendered":"Omar Al-Bashir steps down, transitional government announced: Al-Arabiya TV"},"content":{"rendered":"<div itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-io-article-url=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1480936\/middle-east\" readability=\"88.3546875\">\n<p>\nKHARTOUM: Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir is now under \u2018house arrest\u2019 after being forced to step down on Thursday, reports say.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe head of Sudan\u2019s main opposition party said Bashir was under house arrest along with a \u201cnumber of Muslim Brotherhood leaders,\u201d wires agency Reuters said, quoting Dubai-based Al-Hadath TV.<\/p>\n<p>\nSudanese sources confirmed the report and told Reuters Bashir was at the presidential residence under \u201cheavy guard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\nThe minister of production and economic resources in North Darfur, Adel Mahjoub Hussein, also told Al-Hadath TV that \u201cthere are consultations to form a military council to take over power after President Bashir stepped down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1481066\/middle-east\"><strong>TIMELINE: Mounting protests in Sudan<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\nThe transitional council will be headed by Ahmed Awad Ibn Auf, the First Vice President and Defense Minister of Sudan, Al-Arabiya TV has reported.\u00a0The European Union has called for peaceful and civilian transition.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe military will make an announcement soon, state television said as troops deployed around the defence ministry and on major roads and bridges in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nAl-Arabiya TV also reported that soldiers have raided the headquarters of Bashir\u2019s Islamic Movement in Khartoum.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Sudanese opposition party said they reject any changes that do not meet the demands of the public, also adding how the Sudanese youth have the power to affect change in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\nProtesters gathered in front of the military headquarters as military vehicles were deployed on key roads and bridges in Khartoum. They were reportedly shouting \u201cIt has fallen, we won,\u201d Reuters said.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe protests, which erupted in December, have become the biggest challenge yet to Bashir\u2019s three decades of iron-fisted rule.<br \/>\u201cWe are waiting for big news,\u201d one protester told AFP from the sit-in.<br \/>\u201cWe won\u2019t leave from here until we know what it is. But we do know that Bashir has to go.<br \/>\u201cWe had enough of this regime \u2014 30 years of repression, corruption, rights abuses, it\u2019s enough.\u201d<br \/>Crowds of demonstrators have spent five nights defiantly camped outside the sprawling headquarters complex, which also houses Bashir\u2019s official residence and the defense ministry.<br \/>There has been an often festive mood at the sit-in with protesters singing dancing to the tunes of revolutionary songs.State television and radio played patriotic music, reminding older Sudanese of how military takeovers unfolded during previous episodes of civil unrest.<br \/>The Sudanese Professionals Association, which is spearheading the protests, said they will only accept the handover of power to a civilian transitional government.
