{"id":38652,"date":"2019-04-03T18:22:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T18:22:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38652"},"modified":"2019-04-03T18:22:59","modified_gmt":"2019-04-03T18:22:59","slug":"libyan-strongman-khalifa-haftar-orders-forces-to-advance-west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38652","title":{"rendered":"Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar orders forces to advance west"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"121.314389359\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Military forces in eastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/libya.html\">Libya<\/a> loyal to powerful General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/khalifa-haftar.html\">Khalifa Haftar<\/a>\u00a0said they have moved towards the western part of the country, where the capital Tripoli is controlled by a rival government backed by the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The operation, ordered by Haftar on Wednesday, is aimed at &#8220;cleansing the western zone from terrorist groups,&#8221; the forces&#8217; media centre said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The military units confirm its keenness to protect citizens&#8217; safety and public properties of the Libyan state,&#8221; the statement said without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The deployment is likely to alarm the internationally recognised government in Tripoli, whose Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj has been negotiating over a power-sharing deal with a parallel administration in the east that is allied to Haftar.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, Haftar, the chief of the self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), has expanded his foothold in large parts of Libya.<\/p>\n<p>A video released by the LNA media office showed a convoy of armoured vehicles and pick-up trucks mounted with heavy guns on the road.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fulfilment of his (Haftar) orders, several military units moved to the western region to purge the remaining terrorist groups located in their last hideouts,&#8221; the LNA said in a statement with the video.<\/p>\n<p>It gave no details but the area appears to be the coastal road linking the eastern city of Benghazi, the LNA&#8217;s main base, with Tripoli in western Libya.<\/p>\n<p>Reporting from the Libyan capital Tripoli, Al Jazeera&#8217;s Mahmoud Abdelwahed said the LNA&#8217;s positioning is a display of strength.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many analysts and military experts in Libya say that this is some kind of show of force or power. Haftar&#8217;s forces are using that to, first of all, intimidate their adversaries in the west of the country, and secondly, to test their power,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They want to see who wants to confront them in the western area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The UN is holding a conference this month in the southwestern city of Ghadames to discuss a political solution to prepare the country for long-delayed elections and to avoid a military showdown.<\/p>\n<p>Abdelwahed said it was possible that Haftar wants to reach Tripoli before the conference &#8220;so he could impose himself as a de facto security commander in the western area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Libya has been in turmoil since the NATO-backed removal of its long-time autocrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/muammar-gaddafi.html\">Muammar Gaddafi<\/a> in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The oil-rich country has at least two rival administrations: one based in Tripoli and the other in the eastern city of Tobruk, which is allied with Haftar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Al Jazeera and news agencies<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Military forces in eastern Libya loyal to powerful General Khalifa Haftar\u00a0said they have moved towards the western part of the country, where the capital Tripoli is controlled by a rival government backed by the United Nations.
