{"id":38552,"date":"2019-04-03T03:23:10","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T03:23:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38552"},"modified":"2019-04-03T03:23:10","modified_gmt":"2019-04-03T03:23:10","slug":"guaido-stripped-of-immunity-by-venezuelan-legislators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38552","title":{"rendered":"Guaido stripped of immunity by Venezuelan legislators"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"86.43535496\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Venezuelan legislators have stripped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/juan-guaido.html\">Juan Guaido<\/a> of immunity, paving way for the opposition leader&#8217;s prosecution and potential arrest for supposedly violating the constitution when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/maduro-government-bars-guaido-public-office-15-years-190328184741984.html\">declared himself interim president<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span><span>&#8220;[Guaido&#8217;s prosecution] is officially authorised,&#8221; Diosdado Cabello,\u00a0<span>head of\u00a0<\/span><span>the Constituent Assembly\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>said following an assembly vote on Tuesday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">But whether <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/nicolas-maduro.html\">President Nicolas Maduro&#8217;<\/a>s government will take action against the 35-year-old legislators remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Guaido has embarked on an international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/venezuela-braces-protests-blackout-continues-190312142409480.html\">campaign to topple Maduro&#8217;s<\/a> administration amid deepening social unrest in the country plagued by nearly a month of power outages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He declared himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/venezuela.html\">Venezuela&#8217;<\/a>s interim president in January, and vowed to overthrow Maduro. So far, however, Maduro has avoided jailing the man that the administration of US President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/donald-trump.html\">Donald Trump <\/a>and roughly 50 other nations recognise as Venezuela&#8217;s legitimate leader.<\/p>\n<p>Cabello accused the opposition of naively inviting a foreign invasion and inciting a civil war.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They don&#8217;t care about the deaths,&#8221; said Cabello. &#8220;They don&#8217;t have the slightest idea of what the consequences of war are for a country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Constituent Assembly met a day after Maduro ally and Venezuela Supreme Court of Justice Maikel Moreno ordered the legislative body to strip Guaido&#8217;s immunity for violating an order banning him leaving the country while under investigation by the attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition leader is also accused of inciting violence linked to street protests and receiving illicit funds from abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The Constitution guarantees immunity for elected officials and says that in order to withdraw immunity the accused legislator must be given a preliminary hearing before the Supreme Court.
