{"id":38532,"date":"2019-04-02T23:23:06","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T23:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38532"},"modified":"2019-04-02T23:23:06","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T23:23:06","slug":"egypts-top-court-keeps-al-jazeera-journalists-on-terror-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38532","title":{"rendered":"Egypt&#8217;s top court keeps Al Jazeera journalists on &#8216;terror list&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"128.097009967\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Al Jazeera Media Network has condemned a decision by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/egypt.html\">Egypt<\/a>&#8216;s highest court to keep three of its journalists on a national terror list, describing the move as a &#8220;direct attack on press freedom and freedom of expression&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a statement on Tuesday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/qatar.html\">Qatar<\/a>-based network said Egypt&#8217;s Court of Cassation upheld last week a lower court ruling that designated Salem Almahroukey, Ayman Azzam and Mohamed Maher Akl as &#8220;terrorists&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Individuals added to the terrorism list are subjected to a travel ban, asset freeze and passport cancellation.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s journalists were among more than 100 people designated as terrorists by Egypt&#8217;s criminal court in June last year. The list also included journalists and media workers from other news outlets.<\/p>\n<p>The three Doha-based journalists, who work for Al Jazeera Mubasher, &#8220;are known for their dedication and professionalism&#8221;, the network said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Al Jazeera sees this as a continuation of the Egyptian authorities&#8217; efforts to silence Al Jazeera and its journalists and to deter and intimidate the Network from covering developments in Egypt,&#8221; the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Human Rights Watch, a global rights group, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2017\/01\/24\/egypt-court-names-1500-terrorist-list\" target=\"_blank\">called<\/a> Egypt&#8217;s terrorism list, introduced by law in 2015, &#8220;a mockery of due process&#8221;, as the consequences of designated &#8220;terrorists&#8221; were similar to those for people convicted after a trial.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to journalists, the list <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/07\/egypt-top-appeals-court-overturns-terror-list-ruling-morsi-180704171711654.html\">includes<\/a> members of the banned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/indepth\/features\/2017\/06\/muslim-brotherhood-explained-170608091709865.html\">Muslim Brotherhood<\/a>, which has been subject to a far-reaching crackdown since the Brotherhood&#8217;s Mohamed Morsi was removed as president in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Egypt is <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/egypt\" target=\"_blank\">ranked<\/a> 161 out of 180 countries on Reporters Without Borders&#8217; (RSF) World Press Freedom Index and was described by the group in 2016 as &#8220;one of the world&#8217;s biggest prisons for journalists&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>RSF has said that under President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2013\/07\/201373112752442652.html\">Abdel Fattah el-Sisi<\/a>&#8216;s leadership,\u00a0<span>Egyptian authorities<\/span>\u00a0have waged a witch-hunt against journalists suspected of supporting the Brotherhood and blocked hundreds of news websites.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s website was banned in Egypt in 2017 on charges of supporting terrorism and spreading false news, a claim the network denies.<\/p>\n<p>In its Tuesday statement, Al Jazeera said Egyptian authorities have continuously targeted the network&#8217;s journalists and correspondents since 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/mahmoud-hussein.html\">Mahmoud Hussein<\/a>, an Al Jazeera Arabic journalist who has spent more than two years in an Egyptian prison, without formal charges, the network said: &#8220;We at Al Jazeera demand the Egyptian authorities cease and refrain from targeting journalists and media professionals and release all detained journalists including Mahmoud Hussein immediately.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hussein was detained in December 2016 on charges of &#8220;incitement against state institutions and broadcasting false news with the aim of spreading chaos&#8221;, allegations he and Al Jazeera deny.<\/p>\n<p>The UN has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2018\/02\/egypt-imprisonment-mahmoud-hussein-arbitrary-180203070002530.html\">called<\/a> his detention arbitrary, saying Egyptian authorities &#8220;failed to produce a single piece of evidence that could justify any of the charges brought informally against him&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Al Jazeera Media Network has condemned a decision by Egypt&#8217;s highest court to keep three of its journalists on a national terror list, describing the move as a &#8220;direct attack on press freedom and freedom of expression&#8221;.
