{"id":38516,"date":"2019-04-02T20:23:19","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T20:23:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38516"},"modified":"2019-04-02T20:23:19","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T20:23:19","slug":"wikileaks-assange-repeatedly-violated-asylum-terms-moreno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38516","title":{"rendered":"WikiLeaks&#8217; Assange &#8216;repeatedly violated&#8217; asylum terms: Moreno"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"88.0509259259\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno on Tuesday said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/wikileaks.html\">WikiLeaks<\/a> founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/julian-assange.html\">Julian Assange<\/a> has &#8220;repeatedly violated&#8221; the terms of his asylum in the Andean nation&#8217;s London embassy, according to a local media interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Moreno told the Ecuadorean Radio Broadcasters&#8217; Association that Assange does not have the right to &#8220;hack private accounts or phones&#8221; and cannot intervene in the politics of other countries, especially those with friendly relations with Ecuador.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Without providing evidence, Moreno blamed Assange for recent allegations of corruption in local media and the publication of family photos to social media.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A message seeking comment from Kristinn Hrafnsson, who took over from Assange as WikiLeaks&#8217; editor-in-chief last year, was not immediately returned. But Assange&#8217;s defence team suggested on Twitter that Moreno was trying to use the scandal to pressure the WikiLeaks founder.<\/p>\n<p>Assange took refuge in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/ecuador.html\">Ecuador<\/a>&#8216;s London embassy in 2012 to avoid being extradited to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/Sweden.html\">Sweden<\/a>, where authorities wanted to question him as part of a sexual assault investigation.<\/p>\n<p>That probe was later dropped, but Assange fears he could be extradited to face charges in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/United-States.html\">United States<\/a>, where federal prosecutors are investigating WikiLeaks.<\/p>\n<p>He says Ecuador is seeking to end his asylum and is putting pressure on him by isolating him from visitors and spying on him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ecuador has said its treatment of Assange was in line with international law, but that his situation &#8220;cannot be extended indefinitely&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"32\">\n<p>\n            SOURCE:<br \/>\n            <span>Reuters news agency<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ecuadorean President Lenin Moreno on Tuesday said that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has &#8220;repeatedly violated&#8221; the terms of his asylum in the Andean nation&#8217;s London embassy, according to a local media interview.
