{"id":38354,"date":"2019-04-01T18:23:12","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T18:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38354"},"modified":"2019-04-01T18:23:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T18:23:12","slug":"ukraine-election-poroshenko-attacks-zelensky-before-runoff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38354","title":{"rendered":"Ukraine election: Poroshenko attacks Zelensky before runoff"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"173.081741448\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Kiev, Ukraine<\/strong> &#8211; Ukraine&#8217;s President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/petro-poroshenko.html\">Petro Poroshenko<\/a> has accused comic\u00a0Volodymyr Zelensky, his opponent and the frontrunner in an upcoming presidential vote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/zelensky-face-poroshenko-ukraine-run-exit-poll-190331171422240.html\">runoff<\/a>, of being an oligarch&#8217;s puppet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a Facebook <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/petroporoshenko\/posts\/1575810249220028\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> published on Monday, Poroshenko linked Zelensky&#8217;s success in the polls on Sunday to the work of the &#8220;Kremlin agents&#8221; and oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky, who owns the TV channel that airs Zelensky&#8217;s sitcom series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;I begin the struggle for winning in the second round,&#8221; he declared.<\/p>\n<p>According to the official vote count published by Ukraine&#8217;s Central Election Commission (CEC), Zelensky secured about 30 percent of the votes, Poroshenko &#8211; about 16 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout was above 63 percent, CEC said. The second round runoff is scheduled for April 21.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the Ukrainians who took to social media to react to the election results blamed Poroshenko for his poor showing in the first round.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ReadMoreContentSeparator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/ukrainian-voters-speak-key-presidential-poll-190329194712014.html\" target=\"_self\"> Ukrainian voters speak ahead of key presidential poll <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yurii Kasyanov,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brtcomua\/posts\/2195941897133119\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>\u00a0on Facebook: &#8220;All the five years of his presidency, [Poroshenko] did everything possible and impossible, did his utmost, worked to the point of disgust, so that the people would vote for anyone, but not for politicians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kasyanov accused the president of &#8220;destroying the achievements of Maidan [the anti-government protests that brought him to power].<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was he who flushed the unprecedented patriotic rise of the first months of the war into the toilet. It was he who built an unprecedented corruption system, earning blood,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/4\/1\/5a3666f11a4a41c993fb744cb9efc6f2_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/4\/1\/5a3666f11a4a41c993fb744cb9efc6f2_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td class=\"caption\">Zelensky is better known for playing a president in a TV sitcom [Valentyn Ogirenko\/Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>But to many Poroshenko supporters, he seems to be the only guarantor of security.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, I cannot call Poroshenko an ideal candidate, but if we want to save the sovereignty of our country and guarantee our basic physical security, the choice is clear [in his favour],&#8221; Evgeniy Podroiko, 34-year-old IT specialist, told Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Poroshenko&#8217;s chances<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite his poor showing in the first round, the incumbent president could still overpower his opponent in the runoff, said Volodymyr Fesenko, director of the centre for political studies Penta.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A large proportion of the candidates who did not make it to the second round represent the opposition and the majority of their supporters will vote for Zelensky in the runoff,&#8221; Fesenko told Al Jazeera. &#8220;But Poroshenko does still have a chance to win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ReadMoreContentSeparator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/ukraine-election-unique-village-laments-historical-divide-190328053610254.html\" target=\"_self\"> Ukraine election: A unique village laments its historical divide <\/a><\/p>\n<p>He said Poroshenko would try to trash Zelensky during the debates he had been avoiding before the first round.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Poroshenko will try to show that he is better, more competent and prepared whereas Zelensky &#8211; weak, inexperienced and not ready for the presidency,&#8221; said Fesenko.<\/p>\n<p>Poroshenko&#8217;s team will also try scare the Ukrainian voters by saying that Russia will conquer Ukraine under a weak president, he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Fesenko, Poroshenko&#8217;s team could also attempt to secure a low turnout which would help Poroshenko in the second round.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mixed legacy<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The vote on Sunday was the first since the so-called Revolution of Dignity brought Poroshenko to power five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The 53-year-old, who was elected with almost 55 percent of vote in 2014, seems to have failed to rally his electorate despite his efforts to be seen as a passionate defender of the country&#8217;s territorial unity, as well as the champion of the goal of joining the EU and NATO.<\/p>\n<p>During his time in office, Poroshenko reinforced the country&#8217;s army and ratified the Association Agreement with the EU, the document that enabled Ukrainians to trade with and travel to Europe without restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ReadMoreContentSeparator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/ukraine-pro-russian-city-kharkiv-mistrustful-kiev-190329081248685.html\" target=\"_self\"> Kharkiv&#8217;s pro-Russian protesters still mistrustful of Kiev <\/a><\/p>\n<p>The incumbent president also secured the independence of Ukraine&#8217;s Orthodox Church from its Russian counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>But he failed to rid the country of corruption, or recover money stolen from Ukraine&#8217;s coffers before he came to power.<\/p>\n<p>The elections took place against a backdrop of a<a href=\"https:\/\/interactive.aljazeera.com\/aje\/2015\/ukraine\/index.html\">\u00a0war<\/a>\u00a0that has killed more than 13,000 people in Ukraine&#8217;s eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions, with government forces fighting Russia-backed separatists.<\/p>\n<p>The conflict followed Russia&#8217;s annexation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/subjects\/crimea.html\">Crimea<\/a>\u00a0in 2014 which in turn came after the ousting of Moscow-backed leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/viktor-yanukovich.html\">Viktor Yanukovich<\/a> earlier that year.<\/p>\n<p>Several million of the approximately 35 million eligible voters were unable or unwilling to cast their ballots in the occupied territories.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Follow Al Jazeera&#8217;s Tamila Varshalomidze on Twitter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tamila87v\" target=\"_blank\">@tamila87v<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kiev, Ukraine &#8211; Ukraine&#8217;s President Petro Poroshenko has accused comic\u00a0Volodymyr Zelensky, his opponent and the frontrunner in an upcoming presidential vote runoff, of being an oligarch&#8217;s puppet.
