{"id":38212,"date":"2019-03-31T17:23:30","date_gmt":"2019-03-31T17:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38212"},"modified":"2019-03-31T17:23:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-31T17:23:30","slug":"iraq-arrests-mosul-ferry-owners-after-deadly-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=38212","title":{"rendered":"Iraq arrests Mosul ferry owners after deadly disaster"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"103.396926338\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Authorities in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iraq.html\">Iraq<\/a> have arrested the owners of a ferry that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/iraq-ferry-disaster-mourning-anger-mosul-190324111335043.html\">capsized<\/a>\u00a0in Mosul\u00a0killing nearly 100 people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>In a statement on Sunday, the Supreme Judicial Council announced the arrest of the boat&#8217;s owners as well as three engineers who &#8220;had certified that it complied with regulations&#8221;.<\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">The boat was packed with families from the northern city crossing the swollen River Tigris to celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year, along with Iraqi Mother&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry, which was loaded to five times its capacity, capsized on the swollen river after operators ignored warnings of dangerous weather.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most of the victims of the accident on March 21 were women and children. The strong current washed some bodies miles downstream, and more than 50 people are still missing.<\/p>\n<p>In a Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IraqiSpoxMOD\/status\/1111763139576688640\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> on Saturday, Yahya Rasul, spokesman of Iraq&#8217;s defence ministry, named the owners as Obeid Ibrahim Ali and his son, Ryan Obeid Ibrahim.<\/p>\n<p>The pair were caught in the autonomous Kurdish region in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p>The judicial council said the cases of the owners and the engineers have been transferred to a panel of three judges and a prosecutor.<\/p>\n<p>Iraqi Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/middleeast\/2018\/10\/iraq-adel-abdul-mahdi-named-prime-minister-181003053509104.html\">Adel Abdul-Mahdi<\/a> said blamed &#8220;mismanagement, greed, corruption and negligence&#8221; for the tragedy as angry residents staged protests in Mosul, Iraq&#8217;s second largest city and a former bastion of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a> or ISIS).<\/p>\n<p>A day after the tragedy, protesters in Mosul chanted &#8220;no to corruption&#8221; and pelted the provincial governor&#8217;s car with stones.<\/p>\n<p>Nawfal Hamadi al-Sultan, the governor of Nineveh province, of which Mosul is the main city, was later\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/iraq-parliament-fires-governor-mosul-ferry-disaster-190324140231272.html\">sacked<\/a> by the Iraqi parliament after the prime minister accused him of negligence and dereliction of duty.<\/p>\n<p>A Mosul court also issued a warrant for Sultan&#8217;s arrest on corruption charges.
