An aristocratic family is selling one in Sicily for a lot less than the price of a Tuscan villa or a Manhattan loft apartment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Isola delle Femmine, a wild pristine atoll near Palermo with a 17th century crumbling stone tower, is up for sale with offers invited of more than \u20ac1million &#8212; about $1.1 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component\"><span>It&#8217;s being sold by an aristocratic family which, like many others in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/destinations\/italy\" target=\"_blank\">Italy<\/a>, is struggling to afford the upkeep of estates they&#8217;ve owned for centuries.  <\/span><\/div>\n<p><span>The uninhabited oval-shaped island is part of a protected marine park that&#8217;s now an elite scuba diving and snorkeling spot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ancient Roman anchors and relics lie on the surrounding seabed. Its reef waters are inhabited by lobsters, sea anemones and madrepora stony coral. The water is translucent and has a magical pull. The beauty and silence of the isle is enchanting. It was part of a defensive network of look-out fortresses built to protect Sicily&#8217;s coasts from Saracen pirate raids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There&#8217;s a 360-degree view from the top stretching to the island of Ustica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The fortress was bombed by the Allies in World War II and was later used by the US Navy as a military outpost to patrol Sicily&#8217;s northern coast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;A re-style could turn it into an exclusive private residence or a lavish venue for celebrations and business events,&#8221; says Romolini. &#8220;New owners can apply for tax incentives and funding from the European Union if they come up with a development project that respects the surrounding nature.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The tower is also being touted as a potential location for fashion shows or as an advertising tool for brands wanting to place their logo on the turret.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<h3>Safe haven<\/h3>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"CaptionedImage__component\" readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"Image__component CaptionedImage__image Image__hasAspectRatio\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fill,g_auto,h_28,ar_16:9\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190322162902-italian-island-for-sale-1.jpg\" alt=\"Isola delle Femmine lies off the coast of a village with the same name.\"><\/div>\n<p>Isola delle Femmine lies off the coast of a village with the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Romolini Immobiliare<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Isola delle Femmine translates from Italian as &#8220;island of women.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Legend has it that 13 Turkish maidens cast adrift by their families as punishment for misdemeanors took refuge on the island after their boat was hit by a storm. They lived there happily ever after.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The tales have given rise to spooky sightings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;People say they&#8217;ve seen the ghost of a girl happily strolling along the beach, singing and dancing, but these are just stories,&#8221; says Pilo Bacci.  &#8220;The name stems from Latin and simply means &#8216;island of frontier,&#8217; a safe haven of protection from the open sea.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Wandering ships caught in storms often find shelter in its inlets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The shores are made of tiny white pebbles and there&#8217;s one sandy beach with a little cove to park dinghies and fishing boats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There&#8217;s a rich eco-system of birds and over 120 plant species.
