{"id":37803,"date":"2019-03-28T13:23:21","date_gmt":"2019-03-28T13:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=37803"},"modified":"2019-03-28T13:23:21","modified_gmt":"2019-03-28T13:23:21","slug":"bangladesh-fire-dhaka-skyscraper-hit-by-deadly-blaze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=37803","title":{"rendered":"Bangladesh fire: Dhaka skyscraper hit by deadly blaze"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"133.50400987\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">At least six people have been confirmed dead after fire broke out in a 19-storey commercial building in Dhaka on Thursday,\u00a0<span>officials said,<\/span> weeks after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/huge-fire-kills-dozens-part-bangladesh-capital-dhaka-190221005122286.html\">deadly blaze<\/a>\u00a0in the Bangladeshi capital left at least 70 people dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\"><span>Several people are still believed to be trapped inside the tower in the Banani area\u00a0of the Bangladeshi capital<\/span><span>, according to The Daily Star news website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;When I heard a fire broke out in the building, I quickly rushed out of the building,&#8221; <span>Shoikot Rahman told<\/span>\u00a0AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of my colleagues are still trapped in the office,&#8221; said Rahman\u00a0<span>who ran to safety after hearing colleagues raise the alarm, narrowly escaping the smoke and flames engulfing the building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There was no official word on how many people were trapped inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"article-quotebox\"><p>Many of my colleagues are still trapped in the office<\/p>\n<p class=\"blockquote-writer\"><span>Shoikot Rahman<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Three people died after jumping from the blazing skyscraper while two others appeared to have died from the effects of the blaze, officials told AFP news agency.<\/p>\n<p>People were seen screaming for help from windows, while some lowered themselves down the side of the building.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three people appear to have died afer jumping from upper floors of the building,&#8221; United Hospital spokesman Sazzadur Rahman Shuvo told AFP. Another fatality was reported at the Dhaka Medical College hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Helicopters dropped water on the blaze as flames and thick black smoke poured out of the windows. <\/p>\n<p>Scores of firefighters were backed by navy and air force specialists, authorities said.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera&#8217;s Tanveer Chaudhry, reporting from Dhaka, said &#8220;at least six people have jumped off the building.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are 95 emergency services working and helicopters hovering above &#8230; trying to rescue some people from the roof as well.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fire took place on the 9th floor of the building but we don&#8217;t know under what circumstances.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span>Safety standards<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Fire disasters regularly hit Bangladesh&#8217;s major cities where safety standards are notoriously lax.<\/p>\n<p>A massive blaze in Dhaka&#8217;s old quarter on February 21 killed at least 70 people and injured 50 others. <\/p>\n<p>Fire service officials said chemicals illegally stored in an apartment building exploded and set alight five buildings and nearby streets. That blaze took more than 12 hours to control. <\/p>\n<p>A June 2010 fire in the nearby neighbourhood of Nimtoli, one of the most densely populated districts of the capital, killed 123 people. <\/p>\n<p>In November 2012, a fire swept through a nine-story garment factory near Dhaka killing 111 workers.
