{"id":37525,"date":"2019-03-26T20:23:24","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T20:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=37525"},"modified":"2019-03-26T20:23:24","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T20:23:24","slug":"hotel-that-inspired-star-wars-faces-demolition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=37525","title":{"rendered":"Hotel that inspired Star Wars faces demolition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div readability=\"141.803291851\">\n<div class=\"Authors__component BasicArticle__authors\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>Written by <span class=\"Authors__writer\">Kieron Monks, CNN<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Much of the shooting for the original Star Wars movies took place in Tunisia, and legend has it that one local landmark made a powerful impression on its creator, George Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>The influence of Hotel du Lac in Tunis, shaped like an upside-down pyramid with serrated edges, would later be seen in the fictional Sandcrawler vehicle used by the Jawas of the Tatooine desert planet in the film. <\/p>\n<p>The brutalist hotel designed by Italian architect Raffaele Contigiani features 416 rooms across ten floors of increasing width. <\/p>\n<p>The du Lac enjoyed a glamorous heyday after opening its doors in 1973, with singer James Brown reportedly among its A-list clientele.<\/p>\n<p>But the good times faded. The hotel closed in 2000 and has stood empty ever since. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"32.4467005076\">\nIn 2011, former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali sold the property to the Libyan government-owned investment fund Lafico. Plans to redevelop the site were subsequently<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.letourismemagazine.com\/2013\/05\/09\/demolition-de-lhotel-du-lac\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> but never enacted.\n<\/div>\n<p>The long period of uncertainty may now be drawing to a close. <\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicArticle__image BasicArticle__padLarge\" readability=\"31\">\n<div readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"Image__component\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fit\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190321142306-02-hotel-du-lac-tunis-file-restricted-use.jpg\" alt='The Sandcrawler vehicle from \"Star Wars: A New Hope\"'><\/div>\n<p>The Sandcrawler vehicle from &#8220;Star Wars: A New Hope&#8221;<!-- --> <span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Credit: <\/span><span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Alamy Stock Photo<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Imminent demolition?<\/h3>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"28.6057692308\">\nIn February, architect and activist Sami Aloulou of the conservation group Edifices et Memoires (Buildings and memories) announced on Tunisia&#8217;s Radio Misk that the hotel was<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/theworldnews.net\/tn-news\/tunisie-l-hotel-du-lac-menace-de-demolition\" target=\"_blank\">scheduled for imminent demolition<\/a>.\n<\/div>\n<p>Aloulou&#8217;s statement prompted an outcry on social media from architecture lovers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"30.9847328244\">\nA<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/secure.avaaz.org\/en\/community_petitions\/La_municipalit_NON_a_la_demolition_de_lHotel_du_Lac_Tunis\/\" target=\"_blank\">petition<\/a> was swiftly launched to save &#8220;one of Tunisia&#8217;s premier brutalist structures &#8211; important to the country and to the world.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"32.6136363636\">\nIn response, the Municipality of Tunis<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=969593596580036&#038;id=306204146252321\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that it had not received or granted a request for permission to demolish the hotel.\n<\/div>\n<p>Aloulou was only partly reassured, believing that the denial merely represents a stay of execution. He claims to have visited the hotel recently and witnessed an increasing number of workers on the site. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The danger is still present but not as imminent as we thought,&#8221; he says. &#8220;The struggle continues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Edifices et Memoires aims to safeguard the building&#8217;s long-term future by campaigning for greater public awareness of its historical value. <\/p>\n<p>The group also plans to seek protected status from UNESCO &#8211; and possibly an intervention from George Lucas.<\/p>\n<h3>Twelve scenarios<\/h3>\n<p>Lafico did not return several CNN requests for comment on its plans for the building. <\/p>\n<p>But a member of the team hired as consultants to the owners believes a final decision will be taken soon.<\/p>\n<p>Architect Sahby Gorgi was hired by consultancy group BDO Tunisia to produce a range of possible plans for the site. Twelve different options are under consideration, he says. Some of these involve restoration of the existing site, but the &#8220;preference&#8221; is for &#8220;another structure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"BasicArticle__image BasicArticle__padLarge\" readability=\"31\">\n<div readability=\"7\">\n<div class=\"Image__component\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"Image__image\" src=\"https:\/\/dynaimage.cdn.cnn.com\/cnn\/e_blur:500,q_auto:low,w_50,c_fit\/http%3A%2F%2Fcdn.cnn.com%2Fcnnnext%2Fdam%2Fassets%2F190321143927-hotel-du-lac-outer-wings.jpg\" alt=\"Rooms on the outer 'wings' of the hotel.\"><\/div>\n<p>Rooms on the outer &#8216;wings&#8217; of the hotel.<!-- --> <span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Credit: <\/span><span class=\"BasicArticle__credit\">Sami Aloulou<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Gorgi says the owners are well aware of the building&#8217;s status as an &#8220;iconic symbol,&#8221; and the strength of public opinion in favor of retaining the hotel in some form. <\/p>\n<p>But he adds that the building has fallen into decay after abandonment, and suffered further damage from a fire in 2011, which would make restoration costly and difficult. <\/p>\n<p>Further studies are ongoing, says Gorgi. He expects a final decision in &#8220;months not years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Symbolic, but functional<\/h3>\n<p>Conservationists argue that the city, country, and region would be losing unique heritage if the building were demolished.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;(The hotel) is one of the rare standing testimonies of the brutalist movement in North Africa,&#8221; says Tunisian architect Mohamed Zitouni of the Oxxi studio. &#8220;It is maybe the unique example of this tendency in Tunisia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hotel du Lac was built as an expression of Tunisia&#8217;s modernity and independence. In contrast to the surrounding architecture, the hotel makes a rebellious statement of departure from both traditional and colonial architectural forms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zitouni adds that the design featuring more rooms on the upper floors gave the building functional as well as aesthetic value. <\/p>\n<div class=\"Paragraph__component BasicArticle__paragraph BasicArticle__pad\" readability=\"34.6174242424\">\nAloulou notes that demolition would fit a broader pattern of erasing urban heritage. The Tunisian government recently<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeuneafrique.com\/mag\/606865\/politique\/tunisie-le-patrimoine-urbain-menace-de-destruction\/?fbclid=IwAR3lRye_3_k0cVa1IiACPa-vccYjLTQgyPePk2bfy-AABUvVuaMK969gMCM\" target=\"_blank\">introduced a bill<\/a> that would make it easier to demolish old buildings that could be considered unsafe, which could have far-reaching consequences.\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The authorities have started a campaign aiming to demolish what they consider as old, dangerous, and worthless buildings without even consulting the experts,&#8221; says Aloulou. <\/p>\n<h3>A second life?<\/h3>\n<p>Aloulou does acknowledge the case for modernization, and his group is not arguing the Hotel du Lac should be preserved in its current, deteriorated state. <\/p>\n<p>Instead, conservationists are looking at new possibilities to renovate the site and give it a &#8220;second life&#8221; with a new function.
