{"id":37027,"date":"2019-03-24T02:22:32","date_gmt":"2019-03-24T02:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=37027"},"modified":"2019-03-24T02:22:32","modified_gmt":"2019-03-24T02:22:32","slug":"international-reaction-to-fall-of-isils-last-bastion-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=37027","title":{"rendered":"International reaction to fall of ISIL&#8217;s last bastion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"166.220120378\">\n<p class=\"speakable\">Leaders from a number of countries are reacting to the announcement by US-backed forces that they have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/isil-defeated-syria-sdf-announces-final-victory-190323061233685.html\">captured<\/a> the last enclave held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/isis-isil.html\">ISIL<\/a>\u00a0or ISIS) in Syria, eliminating the group&#8217;s so-called caliphate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">After weeks of heavy fighting and aerial bombardment, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Saturday declared victory over ISIL,\u00a0saying they had flushed the group&#8217;s fighters from their last remaining stronghold in the eastern town of Baghouz, o<span>n the banks of the Euphrates River.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;We announce today the destruction of the so-called Islamic State organisation and the end of its ground control in its last pocket in Baghouz,&#8221; Mazloum Abdi, SDF<span>\u00a0general commander,\u00a0<\/span>told a victory ceremony.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/23\/abfc185a855b485a9716302b9c5fd067_6.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/23\/abfc185a855b485a9716302b9c5fd067_6.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"caption\">\u00a0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The SDF has been Washington&#8217;s partner on the ground in Syria, spearheading the fight against ISIL for the past five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The announcement marked the end of a brutal self-styled caliphate that ISIL &#8211; <span>originally an offshoot of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/organisations\/al-qaeda.html\">al-Qaeda<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; carved out in large parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/iraq.html\"> Iraq<\/a> and Syria in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the capture of Baghouz will likely not mark the end of ISIL as a force in the region, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/anatomy-caliphate-rise-fall-isil-190320140536453.html\">according<\/a> to analysts.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the initial regional and international reaction to the news of the fall of ISIL&#8217;s last bastion.<\/p>\n<h2>Syria&#8217;s Kurds<\/h2>\n<p>The top military commander of the SDF urged the government of Syrian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/bashar-al-assad.html\">Bashar al-Assad<\/a> to choose the path of dialogue after ISIL&#8217;s military defeat, as he announced a &#8220;new phase&#8221; in the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We call on the central government in Damascus to prefer the process of dialogue,&#8221; Mazloum Kobane said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on Damascus to &#8220;start practical steps to reach a political solution based on the recognition&#8221; of autonomous institutions and of the SDF&#8217;s special status.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the battle against ISIL, he said that a &#8220;new phase in the fight against terrorists&#8221; is beginning, adding that the target was now to eliminate the group&#8217;s &#8220;sleeper cells&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>United States<\/h2>\n<p>President Donald Trump said that the US will &#8220;remain vigilant against ISIS by aligning global counterterrorism efforts to fight&#8221; the armed group &#8220;until it is finally defeated&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;To all of the young people on the internet believing in ISIS&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span>propaganda, you will be dead if you join,&#8221; Trump said in a statement. &#8220;Think instead about having a great life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While on occasion these cowards will resurface, they have lost all prestige and power,&#8221; he said, adding &#8220;they are losers and will always be losers&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, William Roebuck, the state department&#8217;s official in charge of Syria\u00a0hailed the demise of ISIL as a &#8220;critical milestone&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We congratulate the Syrian people and particularly the Syrian Democratic Forces on the destruction of ISIS&#8217;s fraudulent caliphate,&#8221; said Roebuck.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we have completed the territorial defeat of ISIS in Syria and Iraq, we still have much work to do to achieve an enduring defeat of ISIS &#8230; ISIS remains a significant threat in the region, (to) the United States and our partners and allies,&#8221; he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>France<\/h2>\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/emmanuel-macron.html\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> said a source of potential violence had been &#8220;eliminated&#8221; but warned that &#8220;the threat remains and the fight against terrorist groups must continue&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Syrian Democratic Forces have announced that Daesh&#8217;s last stronghold has fallen. I pay homage to our partners and to the armies of the international coalition, of which France is part,&#8221; Macron said on Twitter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They fought the terrorists with determination for our security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>United Kingdom\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/people\/theresa.html\">Theresa May<\/a> called the bastion&#8217;s fall &#8220;<span>a historic<\/span> milestone&#8221; in the fight against ISIL, and said the British government remained &#8220;committed to eradicating their poisonous ideology&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The liberation of the last Daesh-held territory wouldn&#8217;t have been possible without the immense courage of UK military and our allies,&#8221; she said on Twitter, using the group&#8217;s acronym in Arabic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will continue to do what is necessary to protect the British people, our Allies and partners from the threat Daesh poses.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Britain said its armed forces had nearly 1,400 personnel in the region providing support to local forces in addition to numerous air attacks carried out by the Royal Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s army has also helped train Iraqi security forces.<\/p>\n<h2>Germany<\/h2>\n<p>Foreign Minister Heiko Maas described the end of the caliphate as &#8220;an important step&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He warned, however, that it was &#8220;clear&#8221; that ISIL &#8220;continues to represent a considerable threat&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We shall not underestimate that threat,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leaders from a number of countries are reacting to the announcement by US-backed forces that they have captured the last enclave held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL\u00a0or ISIS) in Syria, eliminating the group&#8217;s so-called caliphate.
