{"id":36827,"date":"2019-03-22T21:22:55","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T21:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36827"},"modified":"2019-03-22T21:22:55","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T21:22:55","slug":"india-bans-top-pro-independence-group-in-kashmir","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qatar-news.org\/qatarnewsEn\/?p=36827","title":{"rendered":"India bans top pro-independence group in Kashmir"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"body-200771816342556199\" readability=\"154.139424346\">\n<p class=\"speakable\"><strong>Srinagar, Indian-administered Kashmir <\/strong>&#8211;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>India&#8217;s government has for the second time this month banned a top pro-independence organisation\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/issues\/indian-administered-kashmir-141021143036795.html\">Indian-administered Kashmir<\/a>, accusing it of &#8220;supporting extremism and militancy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">In a statement on Friday, the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs said the<span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/explainer-kashmir-armed-groups-190303082652440.html\">JKLF<\/a><span>)<\/span> was involved in &#8220;anti-national and subversive activities intended to disrupt the sovereignty and territorial integrity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/india.html\">India<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">&#8220;JKLF is supporting and inciting claims for the secession of a part of the Indian territory from the Indian union and supporting terrorists and separatist groups fighting for this purpose,&#8221; the statement said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ministry added that if JKLF&#8217;s activities were not curbed, it was likely that the group would &#8220;continue advocating the secession of the state of Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The central government is of the opinion that having regard to the activities of JKLF, it is necessary to declare the JKLF to be an unlawful association with immediate effect&#8221;.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group was banned under an anti-terror law for a period of five years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Its leader, Yasin Malik, was arrested last month and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/03\/india-charges-kashmiri-pro-independence-leader-crackdown-190307164352108.html\">charged<\/a><span>\u00a0on March 8 under the Public Safety Act (PSA), which stipulated that a person can be jailed for up to two years without bail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Regional tensions<\/h2>\n<p>The move on Friday followed a ban imposed in the first week of March on Jamaat-e-Islami, a socioreligious political organisation in the disputed region. More than 300 of the group&#8217;s leaders have been arrested.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown on the separatist groups, which demand an independent state or a merger with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/topics\/country\/pakistan.html\">Pakistan<\/a>, comes after a suicide attack on a convoy of Indian paramilitary troops in which 42 of them were killed.<\/p>\n<p>The February attack, which was claimed by the Pakistani-based rebel group Jaish-e-Muhammad, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/02\/india-pakistan-tensions-latest-updates-190227063414443.html\">escalated tensions<\/a> between India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"imagecontainer item\" data-image-url=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/22\/e3b809ca36f14bd1911664760d28898c_18.jpg\">\n<table class=\"image\" border=\"0\">\n<tbody readability=\"1\">\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/mritems\/Images\/2019\/3\/22\/e3b809ca36f14bd1911664760d28898c_18.jpg\" border=\"0\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr readability=\"2\">\n<td class=\"caption\">India accuses JKLF of supporting &#8216;terrorism&#8217; [File: Danish Ismail\/Reuters]<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Though the situation calmed down after days of rising tension between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, deadly violence has continued in Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>At least five fighters and a 12-year-old boy have been killed in three separate gun battles across the region since Thursday.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Cannot be silenced&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Originally founded in the 1970s, the JKLF has repeatedly called for the independence of Jammu and Kashmir.<\/p>\n<p>In 1988, as scores of youngsters from Indian-administered Kashmir crossed the border to get arms training in Pakistan, JKLF was one of the first groups to start an armed campaign\u00a0in the disputed territory.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 1994, the JKLF disbanded its military wing, with Malik committing himself to a political struggle to achieve independence for the entire region of the former princely state.<\/p>\n<p>In comments made to Al Jazeera, a senior JKLF leader condemned the ban and accused India of seeking &#8220;excuses to unleash terror on people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They are looking for small reasons to jail us for years. Everyone cannot be silenced. In the 1990s, too, we faced all kinds of situations, including the worst torture,&#8221; the leader said on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities are likely to seal the office of the group, located in the main city of Srinagar.<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;Open prison&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Mehbooba Mufti, the former chief minister of the state, criticised the ban and said, &#8220;It will turn Kashmir into an open-air prison.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yasin Malik renounced violence as a way of resolving J&#038;K issue a long time ago,&#8221; she said in a tweet. &#8220;What will a ban on his organisation achieve?
